'Sh*t, I'm a F*cking Jedi': Samuel L. Jackson Was Shocked by Star Wars Role

As a die-hard fan of Samuel L. Jackson‘s illustrious career, I can confidently say that his portrayal of Mace Windu in Star Wars is nothing short of iconic. It’s fascinating to learn about the serendipitous circumstances that led him to this role, initially intending to be a nameless stormtrooper.

In the vast array of memorable characters portrayed by Samuel L. Jackson, Mace Windu from Star Wars might just take the cake as the most iconic. Interestingly, the actor himself admitted that he never imagined he’d embody a Jedi in this legendary sci-fi franchise, initially assuming his role would be that of an unnamed stormtrooper. One can only ponder what the Star Wars prequels would have looked like without Mace Windu, who would have mentored Anakin Skywalker if not for him, or perhaps Jango Fett would still be alive, and we might never have known about purple lightsabers. It’s fascinating to think that Samuel L. Jackson himself was unaware of the lasting impact his Star Wars character would have on fans worldwide.

In an interview with GQ, Samuel L. Jackson recounted that during the 90s, he expressed his desire to be part of Star Wars, not realizing it would lead to a significant role. George Lucas eventually contacted him about visiting the Star Wars Ranch, and when they met, Jackson humbly asked to play a stormtrooper in one of Lucas’ films.

A few months down the line, Samuel L. Jackson received a call asking him to feature in Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace. Unaware of his character, the actor was escorted to his dressing room where he was informed that he would be playing an essential Jedi. Jackson responded by saying:

As I casually survey the space, I notice a pair of boots and a robe here, making me ponder whose private chamber this might be. Curiosity piqued, I’m handed some scripts – about four pages in total. The characters seem familiar: Mace Windu and Yoda. A sudden realization strikes me, “Could it be that I’ve been given the part of Mace Windu?

After that, I descend the stairs and the fellow approaches me with a Halliburton case. He opens it to reveal what appears to be lightsaber handles. They ask me to choose one, so I attach it to my belt. In amazement, I exclaim, “Wow, I’m turning into a Jedi!

In the Star Wars prequels, Mace Windu was present in all three films, and subsequently joined the cast for The Clone Wars, both the movie and the TV series. Tragically, his fate was sealed by Sith Master Palpatine in Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, where he met a gruesome end – dismembered, shocked with electricity, and thrown out of a window. Despite this grim demise, there’s a possibility that Jackson might reprise his role as the character someday.

Samuel L. Jackson suggests that, contrary to the apparent “death” of his character Mace Windu, there’s a possibility that he might still be alive in the Star Wars universe. He likens it to other characters in the series who have managed to survive despite losing limbs, stating, “There are many characters in the Star Wars world who have lost a hand or an arm and yet they continue to thrive.” In this universe where even Darth Maul survived being split in half, and Emperor Palpatine found a way to return, it’s not impossible that Mace Windu could reappear in future Star Wars projects. Jackson further adds:

“Jedis can fall from great heights without dying. Come on.”
