‘Shut The Hell Up And Listen To Me’: That Time Charles Barkley Received A Stern Message From NBA Great Bill Russell After He Complained About His Taxes

As a seasoned gamer with a deep appreciation for sports history and the lives of legendary figures, I can’t help but be captivated by the story of Charles Barkley and Bill Russell. The interaction between these two titans of basketball serves as a powerful reminder of the impact that words can have when delivered by someone who has earned respect and admiration.

It’s hard to find someone who disagrees with the idea that Charles Barkley is among the most vocal individuals in sports and entertainment history. There aren’t many people who can make him feel intimidated or silence him completely. However, there was at least one individual who succeeded in doing so years ago, and that person was none other than the late NBA legend Bill Russell. The legendary Boston Celtic is said to have delivered a firm rebuke to Barkley when he once criticized his tax situation.

Charles Barkley has had significant encounters with prominent NBA figures such as Magic Johnson, Shaquille O’Neal, and Julius Erving. He was also friends with Michael Jordan, but they eventually had a disagreement. In the “Let’s Go” podcast, Barkley mentioned that he hadn’t known Bill Russell before the eleven-time champion reached out to him about a tax matter. Nevertheless, Russell didn’t hesitate to call Barkley and explain why he shouldn’t gripe about it.

In the late ’80s, I was playing for the Sixers. During that time, I was grumbling over my tax issues, not knowing much about Mr. Russell. Yet, he reached out to me. “Is this Charles Barkley?” he asked. I confirmed it. “Bill Russell here,” he replied. After a stern introduction, he instructed me to be quiet and listen. He then inquired about my upbringing. I disclosed that I was from Alabama. He followed up by asking if I attended public school. I confirmed this. His next question was whether the police were frequently present in my neighborhood. I acknowledged that they were indeed a common sight. To my surprise, he mentioned the importance of paying taxes, stating that he didn’t want to hear me complaining about them on television ever again.

As a fan, it’s amusing to imagine Bill Russell, a legend in his own right, giving Charles Barkley a lecture after financial complaints. But truth be told, the esteemed athlete and civil rights activist presented some thought-provoking arguments to the up-and-coming athlete. Russell was well aware that our roles as professional athletes placed us in privileged positions. Throughout the interview (which was shared on X), he made sure Barkley never forgot his elevated social status too.

Each time he encountered me, he’d remark, “Son, we’re exceptionally fortunate individuals. We earn more than educators, firefighters, police officers, nurses – people who truly matter and make a difference. Never forget that on television or express dissatisfaction. You’re earning hundreds of thousands annually just for bouncing a ball around.

Charles Barkley frankly admitted that he deliberately forfeited approximately $100 million in potential earnings, prioritizing job preservation at TNT instead.

As a gamer, I’ve always admired Mr. Russell for his unique blend of joviality and no-nonsense demeanor, particularly in his interactions with other players. The tales spun about him are nothing short of epic – and rightfully so. To put it mildly, he was an incredibly influential figure, and I’m grateful that there were numerous athletes who eagerly absorbed the wisdom he shared.

Charles Barkley can sometimes be forceful in his statements, but he also takes care to offer thoughtful guidance when needed. Lately, Barkley has been expressing strong opinions about the rumored cancellation of TNT’s “Inside the NBA,” a show he’s co-hosted since 2000. He’s been outspoken about how this situation is particularly difficult for his colleagues who aren’t as financially secure as him. This suggests that Barkley has become more aware of the privilege Bill Russell tried to highlight in their past conversations.

Make sure to tune in for Charles Barkley and his fellow hosts when Inside the NBA comes back (possibly for its final season) on October 17th, only on TNT as part of their 2024 TV lineup. Currently, you can also watch the fantastic documentary Bill Russell: Legend by subscribing to Netflix.
