As a dedicated Star Wars enthusiast, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming movie titled “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” which should grace our screens in approximately a year from now. The anticipation is palpable, given that this cinematic journey continues the enthralling tale of Din Djarin and his adorable companion, Grogu.
This highly-anticipated film is an extension of the wildly successful TV show with the same name, “The Mandalorian.” In this new chapter, we’ll accompany our titular characters across the galaxy, joining forces with New Republic rangers to eradicate remnants of the Imperial threat.
Although Star Wars hasn’t revealed much information about The Mandalorian and Grogu as of now, sneak peeks at events like Star Wars Celebration Japan and discussions with the cast and crew have given us hints about some fantastic developments coming to the franchise’s first film in seven years. From seeing beloved characters reappearing in this narrative to encounters with unforeseen wonders, here are eight compelling reasons why you should be thrilled for The Mandalorian and Grogu movie.
8. Sigourney Weaver Is Joining The Star Wars Universe
Weaver Is A Sci-Fi Legend
In the show “The Mandalorian and Grogu”, many of its cast members remain unknown, but a significant addition to Pedro Pascal’s team is Sigourney Weaver. Known for her legendary roles in series like Alien, Ghostbusters, and Avatar, she will now be part of the Star Wars universe as Colonel Ward. This character was once a member of the Rebel Alliance and now holds a prominent position at Adelphi Base, a facility belonging to the New Republic rangers.
In the movie, details about Weaver’s character are scarce, but her illustrious career speaks volumes about how she will indelibly mark the Star Wars galaxy with this role. On-screen, Weaver consistently outshines, and it’s evident that she’s readying herself to do the same in The Mandalorian and Grogu, crafting a character that leaves audiences eager for more.
7. Grogu Is A More Capable Warrior Than Ever Before
He’s Truly A Mandalorian Apprentice Now
Since being affectionately nicknamed “Baby Yoda” during the first season of The Mandalorian, Grogu has grown considerably. From episode 2 onwards in the Disney+ series, he’s been rescuing Din Djarin regularly. However, it was during The Mandalorian season 3 that we truly saw Grogu standing strong, not just for himself but also for his father. The movie further amplifies this role of his.
In the captivating glimpses from The Mandalorian and Grogu at Star Wars Celebration, it’s clear that this little one isn’t just tagging along on missions; he’s demonstrating remarkable abilities. From effortlessly disintegrating a mouse droid with the Force to swimming with surprising proficiency, it seems Grogu is no longer merely accompanying his Mandalorian protector. Instead, I find myself marveling at how this youngling is embodying the qualities of a future warrior, learning from and growing into the capable figure his guardian has always been.
6. The Movie Is Set To Focus On Its Characters Above All Else
It’s Learning From Season 3’s Biggest Criticism
In my opinion, as a passionate movie enthusiast, the recent season of “The Mandalorian” didn’t quite live up to its initial brilliance due to a shift in focus. Instead of primarily following Din Djarin and Grogu, the narrative ventured into the reclaiming of Mandalore, which allowed Katee Sackhoff’s Bo-Katan Kryze to share the limelight. Now, don’t get me wrong, her story was captivating, but what truly resonated with audiences was the heartwarming bond between Din and Grogu as a duo.
Currently, the masterminds behind “The Mandalorian” and “Grogu” are preparing to spotlight Din Djarin and Grogu once more. During talks at Star Wars Celebration, it was revealed that this story will primarily delve into the characters, particularly the bond between Din Djarin and Grogu. Although larger events will undoubtedly be unfolding concurrently, the development of Din Djarin, Grogu, and their relationship is set to be the core focus of this film, taking center stage.
5. Din Djarin Is Back To Being His True Warrior Self
He’s Not Messing Around Anymore
In a peculiar turn of events for Din Djarin, both “The Book of Boba Fett” and the third season of “The Mandalorian” presented unusual challenges. Despite opportunities to prove his warrior prowess, such as his initial scene in the former and the finale of the latter, it was noticeable that Mando appeared less formidable compared to seasons 1 and 2. Previously, he seemed almost invincible, but in these recent “Star Wars” installments, he faced difficulties with the Darksaber and even relatively weak opponents.
It’s possible that the reason Din Djarin seemed to have fewer fights in some of his previous titles is due to limited opportunities, but based on the footage revealed at Star Wars Celebration, The Mandalorian and Grogu will offer ample chances for Din Djarin to display his warrior abilities. In fact, the trailer’s opening scene depicts him swiftly eliminating a room full of Imperials in mere seconds, reminiscent of his past combats.
4. The Razor Crest Is Making Its Long-Awaited Return
Din Djarin Gets His Trust Vessel Back
In the epic saga of Star Wars, the Razor Crest, a well-known spaceship, suffered an iconic demise when it was destroyed by Moff Gideon on Tython during The Mandalorian’s second season. This heart-stopping incident eventually paved the way for Din Djarin to acquire an N-1 starfighter from Peli Motto. Though this spacecraft is both nostalgic and impressive, it no longer aligns with Din’s current role as a Mandalorian guide and father figure to Grogu.
The Razor Crest’s return in “The Mandalorian and Grogu” is quite exciting. While a brief glimpse was given during D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event in 2024, it was at Star Wars Celebration Japan where we saw more of its complete form. Initially, it was uncertain if Din would reclaim the ship, but behind-the-scenes images from Celebration suggest that he will indeed make the Razor Crest his home once again.
3. A Star Wars Rebels Hero Is Coming To The Big Screen
And It’s Not Who You Might Expect
It’s always thrilling when characters who first appear in the Star Wars animated series get a chance to make their mark on live-action, particularly on the big screen. This is what’s happening with Garazeb “Zeb” Orrelios, a popular character from the Star Wars Rebels animated show. Zeb stepped into live-action for the first time in The Mandalorian season 3, making a brief appearance in episode 5, “Chapter 21: The Pirate.” Although Zeb and Din Djarin haven’t met yet, it appears they will be teaming up in this upcoming movie.
In the series “Rebels,” Zeb is an outstanding character, and it’s thrilling news that Steve Blum will reprise his role in live-action. Apart from this excitement, there’s another significant reason why Zeb’s role matters. Although he was absent in “Ahsoka” season 1, Zeb has been confirmed for “Ahsoka” season 2. Notably, Zeb’s presence in both the TV show and the movie will likely interweave their narratives in a manner that prepares for Dave Filoni’s upcoming wrap-up film of the “The Mandalorian” era.
2. The Clone Wars Movie May Be Getting Some Proper Justice
Rotta’s Back, Baby!
As a diehard Star Wars fan, I’ve been buzzing for months about the whispers that Rotta the Hutt from Star Wars: The Clone Wars might make an appearance in The Mandalorian and Grogu. And just when I thought it was all speculation, the closing scenes at Star Wars Celebration Japan left no room for doubt – Rotta’s offspring, Jabba the Hutt’s son, is indeed set to play a part in this epic tale!
The muscular incarnation of Rotta, portrayed by Jeremy Allen White from The Bear, was a sight to behold, especially in that gladiatorial-style arena where Din Djarin and Grogu sat as captivated spectators. I can hardly wait to see how this story unfolds!
This development may bring an unforeseen sense of justice for the movie adaptation of “The Clone Wars,” a project previously seen as somewhat rough and ready – a stark contrast to the outstanding quality of its television show counterpart with the same name. It isn’t the first time that the “Clone Wars” movie has received recognition in recent “Star Wars” productions, such as the revisit to Teth planet in “Star Wars: The Bad Batch” season 3. However, this acknowledgement on the big screen is by far the most substantial.
1. Din Djarin Will No Doubt Be Helmet-Less At Least Once
For The First Time In 6 Years
Fans have eagerly anticipated another helmet-free moment from The Mandalorian character played by Pedro Pascal, given his growing popularity following his debut in 2019. However, since the emotional farewell scene at the end of season 2 on December 18, 2020, Din has kept his helmet on continuously. Consequently, when The Mandalorian and Grogu premiere, it will mark almost six years since we last glimpsed his face uncovered.
It’s great news that the trend should come to an end with the upcoming movie, and it seems like our hopes are reinforced as Finn’s actor, Pascal, expressed his desire for at least one scene without a helmet during Star Wars Celebration Japan. In fact, we already got a sneak peek of him sans-helmet in a new photo unveiled at the event. Notably, Pascal was also required on set for some time, as confirmed by stunt actor Lateef Crowder via Instagram last year.
It is now clear to me that we will soon witness Din Djarin without his helmet again, possibly more than once. The scenario of a tender moment between him and Grogu is quite plausible, and there could even be another such instance with higher stakes, perhaps during an action sequence considering Crowder’s hint about Pascal’s on-set activities. In any case, it appears that the relationship between The Mandalorian and Grogu is set to revive a popular trend from their original series.
The Mandalorian and Grogu hits theaters May 22, 2026.
