As a long-time fan of the Alien franchise and having had the privilege to witness Sigourney Weaver‘s incredible portrayal of Ellen Ripley, I can’t help but feel a deep sense of empathy for both her and David Fincher regarding the struggles they faced during the production of Alien 3. It’s unfortunate that studio interferences often lead to the derailment of a director’s original vision, as was the case with Alien 3.
Sigourney Weaver, the actress who portrayed Ellen Ripley in the Alien series, has disclosed the initial concept behind Alien 3’s storyline and the challenges David Fincher encountered while directing the film. Although Alien 3 is often criticized as an outlier within the enduring science-fiction franchise, it remains divisive even 30 years after its debut. For Weaver, the unfavorable reception of her third appearance as Ripley was due to studio meddling that she believes hindered Fincher’s intended direction for the sequel.
During an extensive conversation with Deadline, Sigourney Weaver reminisced about her long-standing relationship with the Alien series. Given that the storyline is currently experiencing a revival following the successful launch of Alien: Resurrection and the forthcoming television program Alien: Origins, it’s an ideal moment for the actress to look back on what some consider one of the less-acclaimed Alien films.
Speaking about the production challenges faced during the filming of “Alien 3,” Weaver reminisced about the numerous disagreements Fincher encountered with the studio to maintain his creative vision for the movie. Moreover, she discussed the initial concept of the script that would have positioned the storyline differently from the penal colony setting in the final version. In her words:
As a movie reviewer, let me share my thoughts: “It was evident that director David Fincher faced an uphill battle daily, fighting tooth and nail for his vision to materialize on set tomorrow. Unfortunately, it seemed the script didn’t receive the personal touch from him before production commenced, making filmmaking arduous. This dynamic certainly adds a layer of complexity to the creative process.”
“I remember that Vincent Ward’s initial screenplay centered around monks in a monastery, with Ripley spending half of it in a coma. This period was challenging for me because the studio wasn’t as supportive as I had hoped. It was a pivotal time when studios shifted from ‘let’s create fantastic films’ to ‘let’s avoid financial loss.’ They came up with an excellent idea by bringing David Fincher on board for his debut film, but failing to back him up was quite foolish. Working in England during production made things somewhat easier. I’ve learned that David has distanced himself from the project, which saddens me because I enjoyed collaborating with him, and I believe we produced a good movie. I’m glad he had an opportunity to make his version. It was a talented cast.”
Alien 3 Went Through Many Changes That Hindered Its Success
After the hit film Aliens in 1986, it wasn’t long before plans for another sequel to Ridley Scott’s 1979 horror classic were underway. The initial script, penned by William Gibson in 1987, was an action-packed tale involving Xenomorphs used as weapons, but this concept didn’t stick. Instead, numerous ideas were proposed and discarded until they landed on a story by Vincent Ward, set on a secluded planet where a community of monks had sought sanctuary. Initially intended to direct the film himself, Ward’s departure was prompted by the studio’s insistence on altering several aspects of the script, eventually leading to David Fincher taking over. The script then underwent multiple revisions by Walter Hill and David Giler, followed by Rex Pickett and Fincher, resulting in a film that was a fusion of various creative inputs.
Initial reactions to the movie “Alien 3” were quite divided upon its initial release. However, a fresh version of the film, titled the “Assembly Cut,” managed to address and clarify some of the original’s plot inconsistencies since director David Fincher distanced himself from the project. This revised edition received slightly more favorable responses compared to its theatrical debut.
It’s evident from Weaver’s statements and Fincher’s comments beforehand that the movie would have had a distinct flavor if the director were given creative freedom. This idea is reinforced by the current box office success of “Alien: Romulus“, as director Fede Álvarez has openly stated that this latest “Alien” film was his intended vision, with minimal guidance from franchise legends Ridley Scott and James Cameron. This singular approach seems to have been a smart move, as “Alien: Romulus” has already outperformed “Alien 3” at the box office within just a week of its release in cinemas earlier this month.
