‘Silo’ Season 2 is Streaming on Apple TV+, Original Structure Could Have Damaged the Show

As a movie enthusiast who’s seen more than a few TV shows come and go, I can confidently say that the second season of Apple TV+’s “Silo” is shaping up to be a standout addition to the sci-fi drama genre. The showrunner, Graham Yost, and his team have made some wise decisions regarding the series’ structure, avoiding the potential pitfall of making viewers wait several episodes before diving into the heart of the story.

The second installment of Apple TV+’s “For All Mankind” is living up to expectations as another captivating chapter in the sci-fi drama series. However, fans might not have been as eager for its return if the original layout for this season hadn’t been reworked by showrunner Graham Yost and his team. In an interview with CinemaBlend, Yost stated that one idea would have made viewers wait multiple episodes before seeing how certain storylines unfolded, which he acknowledged could have been extremely “irritating” for the audience.

Decisions about the structure of movies and TV shows can ultimately decide how successful a project is. In the case of Silo, Yost considered an alternating episode format for Season 2, dedicating individual episodes to separate storylines. This would have resulted in one thread following Juliette Nichols’ ( ) journey in Silo 17, while the other would focus on the political and social dynamics continuing to unfold in Silo 18. However, the showrunner quickly realized that this would probably end up being a detriment to the flow of the story, with prolonged gaps in the narrative causing audiences to become disconnected from the characters and previous events. Yost said:

We swiftly decided on our approach. Initially, we considered an alternation of episodes for approximately six episodes, but realized it would be confusing and aggravating for viewers. Instead, we opted to stick with a more straightforward approach, ensuring each story is well-established before jumping between them.

Yost Explains How He Landed on Season 2’s Best Entry Point

Some shows manage to make the shift between seasons appear effortless, as if the narrative never paused. A striking example is the ending of the first season of “Lost,” which unveiled “the Hatch,” providing a smooth starting point for Season 2. As for “Silo,” creator Yost revealed insights into where they decided to begin Season 2, and he emphasized that Juliette’s survival played a significant role in this choice. He explained that her continued existence was instrumental in determining the continuity of the storyline.

In my perspective as a follower, it’s clear she’s alive, having witnessed her survival at the end of the series. Extending that suspense could be a blunder, yet we devised an intriguing prologue concept that sets the stage for her reappearance. We also decided to rewind the narrative timeline. So, we delve into her story within Silo 17, which could span about five days or so. Then, we revert back to the instant she crossed the hill, but this time, we’re primarily focusing on Bernard, approximately 10 minutes later.

A significant factor behind the ongoing positive critical reception and record-breaking viewership on Apple TV+ for Silo is its approach of intricately connecting storylines and allocating equal attention to both plots, starting from the initial episodes. As we are left with seven more episodes in Season 2, fans eagerly await the next chapter before facing the inevitable wait for Season 3.
