As an aspiring actor myself, I can’t help but admire the journey of Matt Gomez Hidaka, who played the role of Cooper in Silo. With only a few years of acting under his belt, he has managed to carve out a niche for himself in the competitive world of entertainment.
In the second season of “Silo,” the theme revolves around rebellion. Following Juliette’s (Rebecca Ferguson) exit at the end of Season 1, the Silo’s inhabitants were left in stunned silence. Instead of cleaning the camera lens as usual, she let the cloth fall to the ground and kept walking, step by step. When she disappeared over the hill, the residents were left wondering if she had survived. If so, might this imply they too could survive? Could everything they have been led to believe about the post-apocalyptic world be false?
Following the clash among different groups inside the silo after their conflict, it’s inevitable that some characters will suffer harm. In the current season, we witness the loss of a lesser-known character, yet their demise is expected to have a significant impact on the events unfolding during the rest of the series.
Who Died in The Silo?
In the escalating turmoil within the silo, members of the mechanical level’s team became increasingly agitated, particularly when their comrade, Teddy (Olatunji Ayofe), was apprehended. He was taken away in handcuffs, accused of graffiti, a crime he had indeed committed. His mother acknowledged his guilt but expressed pride for his courage in standing up. Fearing that the leaders might use Teddy as an example to suppress dissent, Shirley (Remmie Milner) stirred the team into action to prevent Teddy from facing undeserved punishment for expressing himself freely. The authorities begin to sense a potential uprising and are bracing themselves for the consequences of Teddy’s arrest.
In typical fashion, Bernard (Tim Robbins) remains a step ahead and orders Robert Simms (Common) to converse with Patrick Kennedy (Rick Gomez). Patrick is one of the individuals who assisted Juliette in acquiring and accessing the critical hard drive, a pivotal event in Season 1. Bernard believes that they can manipulate Patrick to advance their goals and thwart the escalating agitation among the mechanical folk.
a specific drug to erase Patrick’s memories, going back even before his wife’s entry into his life. This way, Patrick could live undisturbed, without being haunted by the sorrow of her passing. However, there’s a catch – Simms requires Patrick to fulfill a task for him first.
Later, Simms talks to his old acquaintance Reginald Smalls, a skilled marksman, whom he highly respects. Essentially, Reggie is a sharp shooter, and Simms is requesting a favor from him. As Reggie has retired, Simms is asking him to come out of retirement for this task. He is invoking an old debt that Reggie owes him and sending him to the mechanical department.
Simultaneously, in a mechanical setting, Shirley is mobilizing everyone for a resistance. As she moves forward, prepared for battle, Knox (Shane McRae) strives to maintain peace. He understands that this confrontation may not result in their favor or end well. In the periphery, raiders dressed in uniform can be seen, including Reggie. They chant “Free Teddy!” when the authorities refuse to release the young man. An intense fight breaks out as Knox struggles frantically to pacify his people. “This is not who we are!” he shouts. However, Shirley stands with the others. Fueled by anger and her determination to free Teddy, she shows no signs of backing down until the leaders concede to her demands.
In a secluded area, nevertheless, Patrick finds himself seated on the stairs, grappling with his impending actions yet believing he has no other option. He ignites and discards a explosive device, prompting everyone to take evasive action. However, Terry Cooper (Matt Gomez Hidaka) manages to lunge at Patrick just a moment too late. As Patrick steps away, Reggie discharges a gunshot. Yet, Cooper was standing alongside Patrick, shielding him. With the crowd fleeing, Knox and Shirley rush towards Cooper, only to discover that he had been shot instead of Patrick. Shirley cries out for assistance, but it’s already too late.
What to Remember About Terry Cooper From ‘Silo’ Season 1
In Season 1 of Silo, Cooper joined the engineering team as a fresh face. Right before Juliette ascended to her new role as sheriff, he was selected to be Juliette’s protege. Despite his lack of self-assurance and limited expertise, Juliette recognized potential in him and decided to mentor him. It was Cooper who informed Juliette about George’s (Ferdinand Kingsley) demise, unaware at the time that she had a romantic connection with the deceased.
About a year down the line, when the group was busy addressing a critical problem with the primary generator within the silo, which could have catastrophic consequences, Juliette confided a significant aspect of the plan to Cooper. This wasn’t just about fixing most of the generator blades but also getting it operational post-repair. Though Cooper felt daunted by such a crucial assignment and came close to failing, he ultimately succeeded, thus averting disaster. This victory filled Juliette with confidence that she was leaving mechanical matters in capable hands, knowing that there were team members like Cooper around.
In the show, Cooper didn’t feature extensively but got the most exposure during the episode where the generator was repaired. However, due to his integral role within the closely bonded team in Mechanical, his demise is expected to leave a significant mark.
Initially, for Knox and Shirley, losing one of their own wasn’t something they were prepared to accept, especially when the situation was unclear and the deceased wasn’t causing any issues. Cooper met an unnecessary end, and they will be seeking retribution for him. Knox had a contentious chat with Cooper as well, given that he was irate over Cooper’s decision to spy on Shirley. Instead of cooperating, Cooper became involved in her rebellion efforts. When Cooper urgently tells Knox that they “needed to talk,” it’s evident he wanted to alert him about Shirley’s plans.
If I should find myself back at the silo, I’d be heartbroken to discover Cooper’s demise. A young, naive soul full of potential, he was never someone I would have expected to meet an untimely end due to a rebellion. His significant role in saving all of us during the first season seemed to be disregarded as mere collateral damage in an attack orchestrated by our leaders. It’s clear that Simms had given Reggie the order to eliminate Patrick, once their task was complete, with no genuine intention of keeping his word and setting him free.
Without Cooper’s help, Juliette wouldn’t have been able to fix the generator. If she finds out about the incident, her anger will be intense – possibly even vengeful. This anger could escalate significantly if she learns who started the firebomb and why. There’s a chance that she may feel remorse for her part in getting Patrick into trouble initially.
Where Else Have You Seen Matt Gomez Hidaka?
Matt Gomez Hidaka is still relatively fresh in the acting world, having started only in 2019. Prior to his TV debut as a guest star in one 2021 episode of Chicago P.D. playing Miguel Reyes, he had already featured in multiple short films. Later, he landed the role of Cooper in Silo’s Season 1, where he appeared in four episodes.
However, he’s got other productions underway. He’s set to feature in a modern Western titled “Eddington“, which is now in the post-production phase. This movie boasts an impressive cast that includes Pedro Pascal, Luke Grimes, Deirdre O’Connell, Joaquin Phoenix, Emma Stone, and Austin Butler, but the specifics of his character remain undisclosed. Furthermore, another film titled “The Wilderness” is also in post-production, with Vinessa Shaw, Hunter Doohan, Sam Jaeger, and Lamar Johnson as the main cast. Unfortunately, details about this project and his part within it are scant at the moment.
Although Cooper wasn’t a prominent character in Silo, his demise highlights a more significant issue. During times of turmoil, it’s not always those with the most prominent voices who suffer the most unfortunate fates. While Shirley and their group in Mechanical had noble intentions with their protest, they overlooked the power and sway of the leaders.
They shouldn’t have allowed such obstacles to silence them from expressing their thoughts openly and seeking clarification. However, leaders like Bernard are ever prepared and eager to act in whatever manner necessary to preserve order. Not only did they plan this action to quell the protests and avert an impending uprising, but they also intended it to sow fear.
Regrettably, Cooper gave up his life. This is particularly tragic because he wasn’t actively participating in the protests but was actually attempting to prevent others from getting hurt when he passed away. However, his death provided Juliette with time before the protests escalated into a full-blown rebellion. So, under these circumstances, it can be asserted that Cooper died as a hero.
