Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for Sirens, Episode 5!
In simple terms, the showrunner of the Netflix series “Sirens,” Molly Smith Metzler, has discussed how she created the series’ climactic conclusion and potential interpretations among viewers. The show centers around Devon DeWitt (played by Meghann Fahy), a determined woman on a quest to find her missing younger sister, Simone (Milly Alcock), who took a job as a personal assistant for Michaela Kell (Julianne Moore), a wealthy philanthropist. As Devon delves deeper into the mystery surrounding her sister’s disappearance, she grows suspicious of Simone’s relationship with Michaela. Eventually, Devon’s inquiries lead to critical decisions for all parties involved, as depicted by the series finale of “Sirens.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Metzler discusses her motivations behind the series, her creative process in crafting the finale, and her intention to catch viewers off guard with its outcome. Metzler draws inspiration from Greek mythology and delves into the question of why sirens are considered monstrous. She also suggests that the show’s ending reveals that things may not be as they appear. As Metzler puts it, “This series takes you to an unsettling place, and I believe it challenges you to reconsider your assumptions and understand why you formed them.” You can find more of Metzler’s insights below:
In our writing process, we took special precautions while approaching the final scene. I aimed to make it surprising yet unavoidable. What intrigues me about this ending is that it leaves room for the audience’s interpretation. We experimented with various versions of Simone on the cliff edge in the finale, and the one we ultimately selected has a mysterious Mona Lisa-like smile. Her expression remains somewhat obscure. This choice was made because I believe there’s an interpretation where she emerges victorious, embodying a siren and her powerful roar.
There’s also a version that this situation carries a mix of sweetness and sadness, and it seems to me that the way the audience perceives it reveals quite a bit about their feelings, perhaps even something about who they identify with – her, you, or the concept of home itself, and what actions they might take in such a predicament. To me, she appears to be fighting for survival, and her actions reflect that struggle.
What Molly Smith Metzler’s Comments Mean For Sirens’ Ending
She Wanted To Make Viewers Question Their Own Morality
Metzler’s remarks highlight the unexpected turn in the finale of Sirens, as well as Simone’s actions throughout the show. This series predominantly explores the theme of choice, demonstrating how both beneficial and detrimental decisions can shape individuals’ lives. In Simone’s scenario, she decides to take on the job offered by Michaela, which eventually results in her relocating to Michaela’s grand mansion and engaging in an affair with Peter (played by Kevin Bacon). Simone’s choices are largely driven by her past hardships and her yearning for a fresh start, as underscored by Metzler in his subsequent remarks.
It’s not within my power to make you empathize with Simone’s actions. What I can request instead is for you to attempt to comprehend them, as if it was you facing the choice of boarding a ferry that might lead back to past trauma and poverty. That’s the situation I believe people should be discussing and debating about.
Metzler aimed to prompt viewers to ponder their personal life choices, as depicted in Sirens‘ finale when Simone gazes out from the cliff edge. This scene suggests that our decisions can bring about both positive and negative outcomes. Although Simone is on the brink of affluence and luxury, she’s come to realize that her future might not be as blissful as she initially imagined, having witnessed the harsh truths of Peter’s marriage to Michaela.

After years of striving, I’ve finally attained what I sought: a new life with Peter, the husband of Michaela, and the title of lady of the manor. Yet, as I gaze upon my Mona Lisa-like smile, it seems to whisper that my future is shrouded in uncertainty, leaving me without the comforting assurance that my sister’s intervention will always be there.
