‘Skeleton Crew’ Creators Reveal How They’ll Tackle the ‘Stranger Things’ Growing-Up Dilemma in Season 2!

Although Star Wars: Skeleton Crew has not yet been confirmed for a second season, following the finale, many fans eagerly anticipate further escapades involving Wim, Fern, KB, and Neel. The question on everyone’s lips is whether this series can steer clear of pitfalls faced by other shows featuring child actors, such as Stranger Things, where characters age faster than their roles demand.

The movie “Skeleton Crew” was actually filmed between September 2022 and January 2023, which means production started two years before its release on Disney+. Interestingly, even though the child actors are maturing rapidly, the development of their characters’ age isn’t an issue for Skeleton Crew; instead, it could be a deliberate aspect of the storyline.

After wrapping up the final episode of “Skeleton Crew”, showmakers Jon Watts and Stephen Ford had a conversation with Entertainment Weekly about the series’ future, focusing particularly on the challenge posed by the child actors growing up and going through puberty, and how this development might impact the show. Watts elaborated:

If we produced more episodes, it’s intriguing to imagine the kids getting older and speculate about their roles in the universe, as well as how the events from the first season might alter their world.

This aligns with previous statements Watts has made expressing his desire for Skeleton Crew to incorporate a time leap. Not just to depict the children growing older, but also to delve into Attan’s role within the broader Star Wars universe.

Contrary to Netflix’s “Stranger Things,” while the series has aired for nine real-world years, within its narrative, just four in-show years have elapsed. Notably, Season 4 portrays the characters entering high school.

Starting with Season 3, the production of Stranger Things faced some interruptions. This was a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, writers’ and actors’ union strikes in 2023, and the hectic schedules of the cast members.

There’s a three-year interval between seasons 3 and 4 of Stranger Things, with season 5 expected to premiere in 2025, keeping up the three-year pattern. Also, Millie Bobby Brown was just 12 when the show initially aired, and she’ll be 21 when it concludes.

‘Skeleton Crew’ Kids Grown Up Opens the Door for More ‘Star Wars’ Stories

In simple terms, the climax of “Skeleton Crew” revealed that the isolated planet of At Attin’s defense shield was breached, integrating it into the larger galaxy of “Star Wars”. If “Skeleton Crew” comes back for a second season, it would be intriguing to observe how the main characters have adapted and, more importantly, how they have matured over time.

While time leaps may occasionally annoy viewers due to the perception that they’re missing intriguing narratives, they also provide creators with an opportunity to instill a sense of enigma, inviting audiences to unravel the mysteries surrounding how and why the characters’ circumstances have shifted. Despite having shared an extraordinary journey as companions, the altered state of their world and individual aspirations for the future could potentially drive them apart.

This development paves the way for fresh narrative opportunities in Season 2 of Skeleton Crew, and it might even allow the show’s characters to participate in other Star Wars ventures, such as the upcoming film The Mandalorian & Grogu. Additionally, these characters could continue their stories beyond the New Republic era and into the sequel trilogy period since many of the children in the series would be around 30-40 years old during the timeline of The Force Awakens.

The Skeleton Crew team has created characters that viewers witness mature over time, much like in the successful strategy employed by the Harry Potter series. If Disney decides to continue the show, these characters will have a chance to develop further.
