Sky Ferreira Releases First Song in Two Years "Leash"

As a long-time follower of Sky Ferreira‘s journey, I can’t help but feel a sense of triumphant relief with the release of “Leash.” It’s been a decade since we’ve seen her outside of Capitol Records, and the wait has been agonizing. But much like waiting for a roller coaster to finally climb that first hill, the anticipation always makes the thrill worth it in the end.

After breaking free from her long-time label Capitol Records, Sky Ferreira has unveiled a new song after a two-year hiatus, signifying her first venture outside of that label in more than ten years. In association with A24, the track titled “Leash” is featured on the soundtrack for the upcoming movie “Babygirl,” starring Nicole Kidman and Harris Dickinson.

This song recaptures Ferreira’s iconic garage rock style, featuring gritty electric guitar chords and booming drumbeats resonating in the background. Her voice is robust and articulate as she croons foreboding lyrics such as “Submit to the master. Ultimately, it all doesn’t matter.

It’s hard not to see the similarities between the themes in the movie and the artist’s long-term career journey. The film, titled “Babygirl,” explores a tumultuous romance between a junior employee (Dickinson) and her boss (Kidman). This relationship is marked by a complex and sensual power struggle that unfolds between them. Interestingly, the actress who plays Dickinson, Ella Fionna Ferreira, started her career as a teenage model and released her debut EP at 18. Following this, she put out her first full-length album at 21. However, the release of her second album, “Masochism,” has been postponed by Capitol Records for nearly a decade now.

With her previous deal with Capitol Records behind her, music enthusiasts will get to enjoy more of Ferreira’s work in the future. The latest single, “Leash,” is available across all platforms for your listening pleasure. Take a moment to hear it below.
