Smokey Robinson Sued By Four Women For Sexual Assault

Four female employees who were housekeepers for Smokey Robinson are alleging sexual assault against the well-known Motown artist, as stated in a lawsuit filed in Los Angeles on Tuesday and acquired by The Hollywood Reporter.

Four unidentified women have filed a lawsuit against Robinson in Los Angeles Superior Court, alleging that he sexually assaulted them at various locations, with the majority of incidents happening at his home in Chatsworth, California. The key charges outlined in the suit are negligence, sexual harassment, physical abuse, unlawful detention, and a hostile work environment, among others. Additionally, they claim that the defendants did not pay them the minimum wage required by law.

In addition to Robinson himself, Frances Robinson, Robinson’s wife, was also named as a defendant. The accusers alleged that she neglected to stop Robinson’s inappropriate behavior, even though she was aware of his previous instances of sexual misconduct, because she did not take the necessary steps to prevent it. This is supported by the claim that Robinson had previously settled similar cases with other women.

The primary complainants – Jane Doe 1, Jane Doe 2, Jane Doe 3, and Jane Doe 4 – asserted that they had been employed by Smokey Robinson. Jane Doe 1 worked at his home on weekends from January 2023 to February 2024, while Jane Doe 2 worked for him from 2014 to 2020. Jane Doe 3 claims her employment spanned from February 2012 to April 2024, and Jane Doe 4 says she was employed by Robinson from October 2006 until April 22, 2024. All four plaintiffs allege that they were compelled to resign due to repeated instances of sexual assault and harassment perpetrated by Defendant Smokey Robinson.

Four individuals, referred to as Jane Does, asserted that they chose not to report their accusations to the authorities due to concerns about losing their jobs, facing retaliation from family members, experiencing public humiliation, and enduring embarrassment and shame. Additionally, the first three Jane Does expressed fear that such disclosure could negatively affect their immigration status. Furthermore, all four women alleged that Robinson frequently yelled at them, employing derogatory language based on ethnicity.

A rep for Robinson didn’t immediately respond to THR’s request for comment.

Jane Doe 1 claimed that Robinson was likely to physically harm her following his habit of taking his wife to the nail salon on weekends. Upon coming home, she said, Robinson would summon her into his bedroom where he would be freshly bathed and wearing just his undergarments.

The lawsuit claims that Defendant Smokey Robinson repeatedly kissed Jane Doe 1 on the mouth, neck, and breasts. According to the complaint, these actions included unwanted digital, oral, and genital contact. Jane Doe 1 stated that she protested and resisted his advances, but he continued despite her efforts. The lawsuit alleges that Robinson assaulted her at least seven separate times.

Jane Doe 2 stated that Robinson’s repeated, brutal sexual advances were not only frequent but also predictable. She asserted that he attacked her in various areas of his home where cameras were absent, such as the laundry room or garage. According to Jane Doe 2, Robinson would call for her, and upon her arrival, he would immediately seize her and digitally penetrate her, causing intense discomfort, followed by rape. She also claimed that Robinson would intimidate her if she declined his advances, alleging that he sexually assaulted her on 23 separate occasions.

Jane Doe 3 asserted that Robinson allegedly sexually assaulted and raped her on numerous occasions, approximately twenty times, throughout the duration of her employment. Jane Doe 4 declared that Robinson first sexually assaulted her in 2007, a year following her initial employment with him and Frances Robinson as a housekeeper, personal assistant, cook, and hairstylist. She further stated that these incidents occurred at Robinson’s Las Vegas home after she had accompanied him there from Los Angeles. Additionally, she alleged that Robinson frequently created opportunities or took advantage of situations to be alone with Jane Doe 4 at their Chatsworth residence.

She asserted that the questioned conduct persisted right up until the point she chose to terminate her job with the defendants.
