SNL Drops One Cast Member, Adds Three More

As a seasoned movie buff with over three decades of viewing under my belt, I must say that the upcoming 50th season of Saturday Night Live (SNL) is shaping up to be quite an interesting ride. The departure of Chloe Troast and the arrival of Ashley Padilla, Emil Wakim, and Jane Wickline promises a fresh take on the long-running comedy show, which I eagerly anticipate.

Saturday Night Live (SNL) is gearing up for its 50th season this coming September, but there will be a change in the cast as one member departs and three new faces join. The cast of SNL has a history of frequent changes, and Chloe Troast, who joined the team in 2023 during the previous season as the sole new featured player, is leaving the long-running comedy series. In her place, three fresh cast members – Ashley Padilla, Emil Wakim, and Jane Wickline – will be joining SNL this season.

NBC revealed that the upcoming season will debut on September 28, also mentioning that Chloe Troast would be leaving the series and three fresh comedians – Ashley Padilla, Emil Wakim, and Jane Wickline – would join the cast. Earlier this year, Punkie Johnson and Molly Kearney had also departed from the show. Meanwhile, Troast was a key player in several popular Saturday Night Live sketches, such as “Little Orphan Cassidy” with guest star Timothée Chalamet. However, Troast expressed on Instagram that she wasn’t asked to come back for the 50th season, despite her wish to continue being part of the legendary comedy series.

It’s unfortunate that I didn’t get invited back to SNL for this season. I really wanted to return and be with all the wonderful people I met there because it genuinely felt like my second home. However, it just didn’t work out.

In time for the 50th anniversary, “Saturday Night Live” is set to release a movie about its origin, directed by Jason Reitman, who also directed “Ghostbusters: Afterlife.” Titled simply “Saturday Night“, the film portrays the turbulent early days of the comedy program as they struggle to air their first episode on October 11, 1975. The night before their debut is filled with chaos and stress as things seemingly spiral out of control, according to the trailer. The movie features Gabriel LaBelle as Lorne Michaels, Dylan O’Brien as Dan Aykroyd, Cory Michael Smith as Chevy Chase, Lamorne Morris as Garrett Morris, Rachel Sennott as Rosie Shuster, Ella Hunt as Gilda Radner and Matt Wood as John Belushi.

The film appears to be a heartfelt tribute to Saturday Night Live, but not everyone seems to be taking the movie’s serious tone with equal enthusiasm. For instance, John Mulaney, a former SNL writer, recently made some playful jabs at the movie on Late Night with Seth Meyers. In jest, he commented, “I worked for five years at Saturday Night Live, but I had no idea it was such a pressure cooker. Apparently, it’s all about high stakes.” Mulaney even went as far as writing a mock script for the film and reading it aloud to an amused audience. Despite his jibes, Mulaney expressed his excitement for Saturday Night Live.

The official synopsis for Saturday Night is as follows:

11:30 PM on October 11, 1975 saw a fearsome group of young comedians and scriptwriters redefine television and culture forever. Directed by Jason Reitman and penned by Gil Kenan & Reitman, the film Saturday Night takes inspiration from real events that transpired in the final 90 minutes before the premiere of Saturday Night Live. Filled with laughter, turmoil, and the thrill of a revolution that barely made it, we join them on this rollercoaster ride, minute by real-time minute, until we hear those iconic words…

The new season of Saturday Night Live is set to begin on September 28, 2024. Meanwhile, Saturday Night will be released in cinemas on October 11, 2024.
