‘SNL’ Skewers Internet’s Obsession With UnitedHealthcare CEO’s Killer

As a dedicated SNL fan with years of laughter and memories etched into my soul, I must say this week’s episode was a rollercoaster ride! The cold open spoofing Nancy Grace’s Crime Stories was a delightful surprise. Sarah Sherman nailed it as always, bringing a unique twist to the story of Luigi Mangione, a man who has become an unexpected internet sensation.

This weekend on Saturday Night Live, they promptly delved into the main news item for the week – the tragic murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO, Brian Thompson, and the intrigue surrounding his suspected assassin that has gripped the online community.

The NBC sketch comedy show kicked off its cold open by spoofing Nancy Grace’s show Crime Stories, where she dives deep into shocking crimes. And the crime that has been dominating the news this week was the murder of the insurance company CEO. Thompson was shot and killed in midtown Manhattan on Dec. 4, and after a multiday manhunt, his killer, 26-year-old Luigi Mangione, was arrested on Dec. 9 in Pennsylvania. He has been charged with murder and is currently fighting extradition to New York City.

The identity of the masked CEO turned shooter has been revealed, and here’s an interesting twist – it turns out to be none other than Luigi Mangione. Sarah Sherman’s Nancy Grace comments that this means ‘game over’. The revelation was met with praise for the diligent work of law enforcement in capturing this dangerous individual, although it seems the public may have unwittingly turned him into a sex symbol instead.

Since Mangione’s picture became public knowledge, there’s been a whirlwind of discussion on social media about his looks, sparking a heated and contentious argument due to the allegations of a severe crime he is facing.

Sherman’s Nancy went on to say, “I’m telling you, this fellow bears an uncanny resemblance to Dave Franco with Eugene Levy’s bushy eyebrows. Now, I’m just saying, what’s happening in our nation? Folks, let me make this clear: This man is not a sex symbol, understand? No, no, he’s something far more serious – a MURDERER!

Chris Rock made his fourth appearance as the host of the sketch comedy show, having previously been a member of the cast from 1990 to 1993 and returning to host in 1996, 2014, and most recently in 2020.

He is joined with Gracie Abrams who is making her SNL debut as musical guest.

More to come.
