‘SNL’ Taps Timothée Chalamet to Serve as Both Host and Music Guest, First Non-Pro Singer in 30 Years

In the past 50 years of NBC’s Saturday Night Live, only a select few have been asked by Lorne Michaels to perform as both host and musical guest in the same episode. These special individuals include renowned artists like Paul Simon, Ray Charles, Elton John, Britney Spears, and Taylor Swift. Interestingly, just four of these honorees were not professional musicians or singers, with the most recent example occurring over 30 years ago: Lily Tomlin (Nov. 22, 1975 and Jan. 22, 1983), Desi Arnaz (Feb. 21, 1976), Gary Busey (March 10, 1979), and Deion Sanders (Feb. 18, 1995).

On January 25th, Timothée Chalamet will join the ranks of notable guests. This acclaimed actor, who has showcased his impressive singing skills by performing numerous Bob Dylan songs in the film “A Complete Unknown”, will grace Studio 8H at 30 Rock for a double role. While Chalamet is recognized as a passionate enthusiast of rap music, it’s expected he’ll confine his musical offerings to a few renditions of Dylan classics such as “Blowin’ in the Wind” or “Like a Rolling Stone.

Timing seems incredibly favorable for Chalamet, aiming to be the youngest actor ever to win an Oscar in the Best Actor category at just 29 years old (breaking Adrien Brody’s record by a few days who is also among this season’s best actor nominees). The Oscar nominations will be announced on January 17, and the final round of voting won’t commence until February 11.
