IMDb ratings are not always the most reliable, much like political polls. It’s all about how accurately we gauge public opinion, and there are certainly better and worse methods for this. Rotten Tomatoes’ Popcornmeter (or audience score) is quite good; they welcome reviews from everyone, but their final score comes only from “verified” viewers, who can prove they bought a ticket to watch the movie. CinemaScore also has a solid system; they have audiences fill out surveys after watching a film on its opening day. However, IMDb allows for more flexibility, which is why Disney’s Snow White has a low score of 1.6 out of 10 on IMDb. But is it a fantastic movie? Absolutely not (and I myself didn’t find it particularly enjoyable). Does it warrant such a low rating? Definitely not.
It appears that Snow White is receiving an unfairly low rating on IMDb due to a recent warning they issued about “unusual activity” on the title. This suggests that there may have been some sort of organized attempt to manipulate the score, possibly through brigading or review bombing. On Rotten Tomatoes, however, the audience-verified score for Snow White stands at 73%, which is significantly higher than the critics’ score of 40%. Additionally, it has a CinemaScore of B+. So, it seems that IMDb might be experiencing some form of rating manipulation while other platforms have a more accurate representation of the film’s popularity among audiences.
A straightforward method to grasp this information is by observing the difference between users who wrote any form of feedback versus those who only gave a one-star rating. Out of the 310,000 users who evaluated Snow White, only 1,739 took the time to pen a review, even if it was just a brief statement. Among these 1,739 written reviews, 1,234 awarded the film a mere 1 out of 10. If these figures don’t immediately raise your eyebrows, I would recommend examining the usernames of these reviewers and the content of their comments for further investigation.
A large number of reviews for the film “Snow White” appear to originate from users with usernames starting as “imdbfan” and numbers. These are accounts created when someone joins IMDb specifically to review a movie. This suggests that many of these “Snow White” reviews come from new profiles, likely set up to negatively rate (or ‘bomb’) the film. Moreover, it’s notable that numerous reviews share similar language, hinting at a coordinated campaign. While it’s acceptable to dislike a movie and share your thoughts, it seems plausible that the majority of these individuals haven’t actually watched “Snow White“.
Why People Are So Angry About ‘Snow White’
It seems there’s been an outpouring of negative reviews due to the use of CGI instead of real actors for the seven dwarfs in this production, which some viewers found disappointing. Additionally, some audiences have expressed frustration with Disney as a whole, perceiving it as promoting a liberal agenda and growing tired of the numerous live-action remakes that they feel don’t match up to the original classics.
In many instances, it appears that much of the criticism is directed towards actress Rachel Zegler, primarily due to her vocal stance against Donald Trump and his supporters, advocating for peace in the Middle East, and finding the traditional Snow White narrative outdated and unsettling. It’s a peculiar society where a relatively unknown individual could provoke immense rage among millions over a children’s film. Perhaps some people should step back, reflect, and gaze into their own mirrors to understand their transformation. The new Snow White, produced by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, is now showing in theaters.
