The son of the producer for “Snow White” is strongly criticizing Rachel Zegler, claiming that her social media posts are damaging the movie.
Jonah Platt, Marc Platt’s son, spoke out on Instagram to counter criticism from Zegler supporters after a Variety article emerged that stated Jonah (under Disney’s guidance) traveled to New York City in August to ask the actress to delete a “free Palestine” comment she posted while acknowledging Disney fans for viewing the Snow White trailer.
A commentator labeled Platt’s dad as ‘extremely unsettling’ and found the producer’s interference with Zegler’s social media posts to be inappropriate.
In a now-deleted post, Jonah Platt, the host of the “Being Jewish” podcast, stated: “Indeed, his father – the producer of a valuable Disney intellectual property worth hundreds of millions – felt compelled to travel cross-country to rebuke his young employee, who was only 20, for intertwining her personal political views with the promotion of a movie she had contractually agreed to market and publicize with a multi-million dollar paycheck.
He went on to say, “This is referred to as adult accountability and it’s clear that her actions negatively impacted the film’s earnings. Freedom of speech doesn’t grant you the privilege to express yourself freely in your workplace without facing consequences. Many thousands of people were involved in making that movie, and she used the platform for her own selfish, immature whims, potentially harming all the fellow actors, crew, and workers whose livelihoods rely on the success of that film. Self-centeredness should not be indulged or supported.
Disney had no immediate comment, nor did a representative for Marc Platt.
The person in charge of the blockbuster “Wicked” has also addressed the topic of actors expressing political views, as he did on his son’s podcast before. Platt was questioned about the “Wicked” stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo voicing pro-Palestine opinions and how he manages similar situations as a producer.
Marc Platt stated, “It’s not desirable for any compassionate person to see suffering amongst humankind caused by kind-hearted individuals.” He went on to explain that sometimes people attach their names to a cause without fully understanding the situation, and they are led to believe that only one form of suffering exists. The message often fails to communicate that there are other forms of suffering, such as those initiated by acts of terror or evil, or those perpetrated by groups with destructive intentions towards specific communities. Platt’s approach is to engage in conversations about these broader issues at appropriate times, when emotions are not running high, and he feels proud of the discussions he has initiated.
Over the past weekend, the new adaptation of “Snow White” fell short of predictions with a domestic box office take of approximately $43 million. Contrastingly, the worldwide earnings for this $270 million live-action remake of the 1937 classic were expected to exceed $100 million; however, it only managed $87.3 million in reality.
The movie’s poor performance has sparked much discussion about who is to blame. Firstly, there’s the issue of remake exhaustion; some argue that a reimagining of Snow White may not have had universal appeal from the start. Additionally, the film was embroiled in several controversies, such as debates concerning the portrayal of the Seven Dwarfs and actress Gal Gadot’s public support for Israel. Lastly, the movie itself received mostly negative reviews from critics, with an abysmal 42% score on Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences were more favorable, giving it a score of 74%.
Indeed, Zegler’s remarks over the past three years have undeniably grabbed headlines and sparked significant debate on social media platforms. She has been vocal in her criticism of the original film and penned a strongly worded message following the election of Donald Trump. However, it’s worth noting that some sections of the fandom were critical of Zegler from the start due to the casting of a young actress of Colombian descent, who is not traditionally white, in the role of the fairy tale character.
Contrary to the mixed reviews the film received, Zegler’s acting was highly commended, with even the harshest critics offering praise. In the build-up to the movie’s premiere, Zegler gracefully marketed the film and managed to avoid any major missteps.
Though the movie itself received a mix of opinions, Zegler’s acting was generally applauded, even by critics who were not fond of the film. In the run-up to its release, Zegler skillfully promoted the movie and steered clear of any significant blunders.
