‘Snow White’s’ Box Office Collapse Suggests Ominous Trend

“Twitter isn’t real life.”

In current times, that particular statement is frequently used. Essentially, it implies that not everything popular on the internet necessarily aligns with real-world circumstances.

And there’s plenty of truth to that maxim.

Many individuals prioritize tasks beyond what’s displayed on Twitter (now referred to as X due to Elon Musk) over their daily lives. Their focus is often on responsibilities such as going to work and putting their kids to bed at night.

others choose not to enjoy the cleverly done video critiques offered by Film Threat or The Critical Drinker (I can’t help but think they’re missing out, though).

For Disney, philosophy served as the final and most promising approach in tackling the adaptation of “Snow White.” Not many contemporary films have faced online controversies to the extent that this live-action reboot of a Disney staple has.

Here’s a short primer:

  • Disney ditches dwarves for fear of insulting the Little People community
  • Disney inserts CGI dwarves into the film following blowback from “magical creatures” movie still
  • Reshoots (and dueling Hollywood strikes) delayed the film’s release by a full year
  • Star Rachel Zegler calls original “Snow White” film weird, dated and stalker-y
  • Zegler says Trump voters should “never know peace“

None of that built positive buzz for the film. Just the opposite.

Disney’s team had wished that the digital disputes wouldn’t impact the movie’s earnings, but unfortunately, those expectations crumbled over the weekend.

According to Deadline.com, the movie, which was earlier expected to earn between $65-$70 million in its opening weekend, may struggle to surpass the $40 million threshold instead.

Disney live-action movies have been performing well on their debut weekends, according to Box Office Mojo:

  • The Lion King” (2019) – $191 million
  • Aladdin” (2019) – $91 million
  • The Jungle Book” (2016) – $103 million
  • Dumbo” (2019) – $45 million
  • The Little Mermaid” (2023) – $95 million

The fairy tale “Snow White” has faced a lukewarm reception, with 44% of reviews on Rotten Tomatoes classifying it as negative.

Nonetheless, a cherished Disney franchise such as “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” is expected to outperform its competitors.

Not this time.

The movie might continue to be successful at the box office due to its family-oriented theme and the ongoing demand for PG movies in the industry. “Mufasa: The Lion King,” for instance, started strong and managed to maintain its popularity for several weeks, ultimately grossing approximately $253 million domestically.

The unconcealed reality of “Snow White’s” theatrical debut was starkly exposed to public scrutiny, and this was no mere fleeting trend. Could it be the emergence of a new standard in entertainment or merely a passing phase in popular culture?

Either way, it’s a lesson movie marketers, and the stars themselves might note moving forward.
