Sofia Vergara Reuniting With Netflixs Griselda Creator for New Series

As a devoted fan of Sofia Vergara, it’s simply thrilling to witness her remarkable journey and versatility as an actress. From the hilarious Gloria in Modern Family to the chilling portrayal of Griselda Blanco, Vergara has proven time and again that she can master any role with grace and passion.

Sofia Vergara garnered success portraying a drug lord in Netflix’s “Griselda,” and she could potentially team up with the show’s co-creator Eric Newman for another venture. In a chat with Variety, Vergara and Newman, who was both the creator and head of production for “Griselda,” hinted at a possible future partnership. If this project materializes, it seems Vergara might return to a comedic character, which is great news for fans of her work on “Modern Family.” The duo didn’t reveal many details about the series, but Newman suggested that it could involve Vergara in a humorous role again.

“It’s about a strong, funny, vulnerable woman in the center of a lot of sh*t.”

And it does have something in common with Griselda:

“I’ll also say that it takes place in Miami,” Newman added.

Following her highly praised portrayal in the miniseries “Griselda,” directed by Andrés Baiz, Vergara’s role has brought her an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. This biographical drama chronicles the life of Griselda Blanco, a woman who, escaping from Medellín to Miami, established one of the most brutal cartels in history. Known as the “Godmother of Cocaine” due to her influence on Miami’s drug underworld during the 1980s, Vergara’s portrayal required extensive hours of prosthetics work. The Emmys, airing on September 15, will pit Vergara against Brie Larson for “Lessons in Chemistry,” Naomi Watts for “Feud: Capote vs. The Swans,” Jodie Foster for “True Detective: Night Country,” and Juno Temple for “Fargo” for the prestigious award.

Griselda Continued Vergara’s TV Success Story

For Vergara, transitioning into portraying Griselda Blanco marked a significant change from her well-known comedic roles. Additionally, Vergara has a deeply personal connection to the violent acts of drug cartels, as her brother was brutally killed by a Colombian cartel in 1996.

1. “It shattered our family, leaving devastation in its wake. It took away my mother. Life as we knew it has been transformed beyond recognition. The circumstances surrounding his death left us bewildered and questioning.”

Despite her brother’s murder having a lasting impact, Vergara remained determined. Years later, she encountered Billy Corben’s “Cocaine Cowboys: The Kings of Miami” docuseries, which introduced Blanco to her. Recognizing an opportunity, Vergara aspired to portray Blanco. However, she acknowledged the risks as Blanco was alive and residing in Colombia at the time. In 2015, three years after Blanco’s assassination in Medellin, Vergara reached out to Newman following her viewing of the first episode of Narcos. Newman, who held an executive producer and writer position for the crime drama, eventually met with Vergara. The process was slow, but Griselda premiered on Netflix on January 25, 2024.

Prior to Griselda, there was the character of Gloria, played by Vergara. Her performance in Modern Family garnered her four Emmy Award nominations, broadened her fan base, and established her as a significant figure in comedy. As per Vergara, she expresses a desire to reprise the role of Gloria:

“I’d die to be on that set. It’d be so much fun. A TV movie maybe?”

Gloria Vergara, known for her role, was married to Jay, a character played by Ed O’Neill in his latest project, FX’s “Clipped.” In a playful manner, Vergara admits she teased the actor from “Married… With Children” about looking “very old.”

“I frequently tease him by saying, ‘Ed, stay alive! If something happens to us, it might delay the sequel, as you are the eldest among us. You can’t pass away before that!'”
