Sofia Vergara Wants To See One AGT Comedian On A Sitcom, But I Like Simon Cowell's Idea Better After He Got Roasted

As a seasoned fan of America’s Got Talent, I must say that this year has been nothing short of spectacular! The quarterfinals have been particularly exciting, with standout performances like Erica Rhodes’ comedic set. Her ability to tackle sensitive topics such as dating, aging, and her voice with humor and poise is truly commendable.

In the upcoming TV lineup for Season 19 of America’s Got Talent in 2024, the quarterfinals are nearing their end. The latest episode saw Simon Cowell as the holder of the golden buzzer. It wasn’t unexpected that aerialist Sebastian triggered the buzzer following an exceptional act, even though his partner Sonia sustained an injury during rehearsals. L6 performed without a second song on this occasion. Closing the show was quick change magician Solange Kardinaly, who received much applause. However, comedian Erica Rhodes continued to shine, although Sofia Vergara and Simon Cowell have differing opinions on her future in the competition. Only one of them was subjected to a roasting!

Indeed, Simon Cowell’s roast was more akin to gentle toasting compared to what Tom Brady experienced this year. However, Erica Rhodes definitely managed to convey her message effectively. After her performance that covered topics like dating, aging, and her voice, Sofia Vergara first praised the contestant with these words:

Funny, relatable. Your material is amazing. I still think you should be on a sitcom.

Although being proposed as a sitcom lead doesn’t necessarily mean Rhodes will win America’s Got Talent Season 19, receiving that praise from Sofia Vergara must have been gratifying. Known for her role on Modern Family and nominated for four Emmys for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series alongside Julie Bowen, Vergara certainly has a strong background in comedy.

Simon Cowell, while still appreciative of the performance, didn’t express as much enthusiasm this time around. Interestingly, despite enjoying her audition, he didn’t laugh on this occasion. Instead, he offered a piece of advice:

I think you need to be in something like Saturday Night Live, amongst a lot of other people.

Unlike Simon Cowell, I did chuckle at Erica Rhodes’ quarterfinals act and wouldn’t have told her directly that she needs others around to be amusing. However, I do agree with his idea of her on Saturday Night Live, not just due to the recent cast departures or the excitement surrounding its 50th anniversary.

This performance proved that she can be funny while performing live on camera, keep her cool, and roll with the punches, as she had a zinger for Cowell when she didn’t get the reaction she may have expected after the compliments from the other three judges. After his critique, she said:

Because it was so much lady material, maybe?

Simon Cowell found it amusing, surprisingly so. In keeping with one of her witty remarks, Terry Crews, the host of AGT, humorously inquired who was responsible for giving her airport rides. Quick to respond, she clarified that Simon wasn’t at the top of her list for this duty. Ultimately, she managed to elicit laughter and demonstrated her comedic skills as well as her live performance abilities on camera.

Although Cowell’s remarks might not have been expressed in a manner that Erica Rhodes particularly enjoyed, I can still visualize her on Saturday Night Live. If you missed her act or simply wish to rewatch it, feel free to take a peek:
