Despite the common belief that popular culture phenomena are now universal instead of local, there can still be unexpected hits that seemingly appear overnight, such as Solo Leveling. This series unexpectedly found its way onto our mobile devices with the ARPG spin-off, Arise, and is about to leave another mark with the upcoming roguelike action RPG, Solo Leveling: Karma.

For individuals unfamiliar with the term, Solo Leveling refers to a popular Korean comic book series where the story takes place in a realm inhabited by demons and demon hunters. The protagonist, Sung Jin-woo, is among the weakest of these hunters, but following a brush with death, he obtains an extraordinary ability: he can enhance his power through a mysterious energy source. Consequently, his transformation from an ordinary individual to a powerful hero occurs at an astonishing pace.

Solo Leveling: Karma is set in a period called the 27-year gap. And for those of you who haven’t already read or watched it, you’ll want to tune out now because spoilers!!!

Skip the Karma
Ah, the time-skip, bane and boon of anime. Karma will see fans experience the 27-year time skip, which saw Sung Jin-woo leap into an alternate dimension to take on the demons plaguing Earth once and for all. In two years’ real time, he experienced more than two decades of battle, offering a wealth of content to plumb for something such as Karma.
Solo Leveling: Karma is slated for a mobile and PC release, and while we don’t have many more details, the trailer teases some fast-paced Diablo-style hack ‘n’ slash action and plenty of flashy moves to be learned by Jin-woo.
