Over time, films based on video games weren’t well-received at the box office and were often the subject of jokes, but that has changed significantly with movies like “Sonic the Hedgehog,” as adaptations have now become profitable ventures.
Over the holiday season, “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” has been raking in money at the box office and recently reached a significant achievement for its star, Keanu Reeves.
Sonic 3 is One of Keanu Reeves’ Highest-Grossing Movies
According to TheCartoonBase’s observation, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 now ranks as the sixth highest-earning film in Keanu Reeves’ acting portfolio. Upon examining his career’s box office successes, the top-grossing films of Reeves include:
- The Matrix Revolutions ($427 million)
- John Wick: Chapter 4 ($440 million)
- The Matrix ($465 million)
- The Matrix Reloaded ($738 million)
- Toy Story 4 ($1.07 billion)
Among the other movies in contention, I firmly believe that Sonic 3 has the potential to outshine films like “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum”, “Speed”, and even “Something’s Gotta Give”. It’s an exciting prospect!
Shadow’s Not Done Yet
As I pen this piece, it’s worth noting that “Sonic 3” had already accumulated approximately $339 million at the global box office. However, it falls short compared to its predecessor, as “Sonic 2” managed an impressive $405 million during its theatrical release.
Despite having already left theaters, Sonic the Hedgehog 3’s box office journey isn’t over yet. If its current pace continues, it might end up raking in over $400 million – and potentially even exceed that amount – within the coming weeks.
Although Reeves didn’t appear in Sonic 2, the post-credits scene of Sonic 3 hinted that Shadow managed to survive his encounter with the older Robotnik, suggesting there’s a chance he may appear in future instalments. For now, the series is preparing for Sonic’s battle against Metal Sonic, an adversary who was already established long before Shadow was created.
What to Expect with Sonic 4
From the mid-credit sequence, it seems that Sonic may encounter one of his classic adversaries within the series, namely Metal Sonic. Unlike Shadow, who possesses feelings and empathy, Metal Sonic, a creation of Robotnik, stands in stark contrast to Sonic.
As a die-hard fan, I’ve got to say that while Sonic and Metal Sonic share the same speed, there’s a stark difference between them. Unlike Sonic, who’s full of life and warmth, Metal Sonic is nothing more than a cold, mechanical shell. Where Sonic’s heart beats with passion, Metal Sonic… well, he just doesn’t have one; instead, there’s an empty void where it should be.
It’s true that the film version of the movie has altered Metal Sonic’s role compared to the games. In the games, there’s usually just one Metal Sonic who often competes against Sonic, but in these films, we see an entire squadron of robotic Sonics. Interestingly, they aren’t particularly tough opponents. Some viewers suspect that a more powerful version of Metal Sonic, perhaps named Metal Sonic Prime, might appear in a future movie, but for now, that remains unconfirmed.
As Amy Rose joins the cast, Sonic’s on-screen family expands even more, leading me to wonder if the movies might soon bring in Rouge the Bat – a character that’s sure to create quite a stir among fans online.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is now showing in theatres.
