As a longtime fan of Jim Carrey and the Sonic franchise, I am absolutely thrilled about the upcoming release of Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Jeff Fowler’s latest insights into the making of this movie have only heightened my anticipation.
The upcoming 2024 movie lineup continues to boast some impressive titles, such as “Sonic the Hedgehog 3”. As of late, director Jeff Fowler of this beloved film series has been sharing insights into the production of the third installment. Lately, he’s been talking about two of the film’s main stars, Jim Carrey and Keanu Reeves, and had some positive remarks to share about them. What truly caught my attention, however, was Fowler’s behind-the-scenes story on how Carrey works during filming – it left me quite amazed!
In the cinema world, the third part of Sega’s blockbuster series has garnered positive responses from critics, largely due to Jim Carrey’s exceptional portrayal. Regarding our review at TopMob for Sonic 3, Mike Reyes expressed that the movie significantly enhances the franchise, an accomplishment seldom seen in multiple-installment adaptations. Fowler revealed to Deadline that both Carrey and Keanu Reeves played crucial roles in the film and spoke highly of their commitment to their respective crafts. He particularly admired Reeves’ captivating complexity on screen.
Keanu just brings so much to it. He has an ability to channel that complexity and a little bit of that danger and darkness, but still be likeable, because Keanu, in all his performances, he’s just a very likeable actor. That’s what we needed for Shadow, that complexity, that intrigue and something to just make him feel very different from Sonic. Keanu was absolutely perfect in that regard.
The film director and animator is spot on with his character assessment of the John Wick star. As Shadow, he is the perfect foil to Ben Schwartz’s Sonic. After all, he was tapped to play the edgy hedgehog antihero, because Fowler thought his role in the action/thriller hitman series made him a perfect fit. I couldn’t have thought of a better person for the job and can’t wait to see Reeves deliver in Sonic 3.
The 46-year-old director subsequently delved deeper into the topic of Jim Carrey, the iconic actor, discussing his commitment to his performances. Speaking about the man behind “The Mask”, he remarked:
He works himself that hard. I learned that on the first film. He knows people are showing up to see him and he wants to deliver.
I’m a die-hard fan of Jim Carrey, and I firmly trust that he puts tremendous effort into his work, as evidenced by his impressive body of films. It’s truly rewarding to know that he pours his heart and mind into every project he takes on. And the cherry on top was discovering the amusing explanations behind his decision to come out of retirement for the Dumb & Dumber role.
Later, Jeff Fowler elaborated on Carrey’s commitment to a crucial scene in which he portrayed two characters exceptionally well. He did so with great finesse.
In the realm of acting, there’s arguably no greater challenge than portraying two distinct characters within a single scene. The initial encounter between Ivo and Gerald served as our most complex sequence due to its extensive dialogue, making it the most demanding in the entire film. This scene was crucial for engaging the audience with the concept, and once we nailed it, it felt like: ‘Ah, this is going to click, and it’s going to be fantastic.’
In my opinion, only a handful of performers can convincingly play multiple characters within a single scene, and Jim Carrey is undoubtedly one of them. (By the way, Lindsay Lohan in The Parent Trap and Ewan McGregor in Fargo are two other instances that quickly come to mind.) I’m confident this upcoming scene will be filled with depth, mystery, and certainly some humor.
Currently, I’m eagerly anticipating watching Jeff Fowler’s third Sonic movie following some fascinating behind-the-scenes insights about Reeves and Carrey. What really piques my curiosity is seeing how Jim Carrey’s commitment to his roles and the film itself will be reflected on screen, given his outstanding performance in The Truman Show.
