As someone who grew up with both Sonic and Simba as part of my childhood, I am eagerly anticipating this weekend’s box office showdown between “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” and Disney’s “Mufasa: The Lion King.” While I have a soft spot for the blue blur, having spent countless hours playing Sonic video games, I must admit that the original animated version of “The Lion King” holds a special place in my heart.
A thrilling battle between films is building up as Christmas nears. On one side, we have Paramount’s “Sonic the Hedgehog” and on the other, Disney’s “The Lion King” prequel/sequel. While the latter has been receiving harsh criticism from critics, Sonic’s new adventure is yet to be rated by Rotten Tomatoes. However, it’s likely that Sonic will score higher than the 58% currently held by The Lion King on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer. As for who will dominate at the box office, it seems there won’t be a clear victor.
As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I can’t help but reminisce about Disney’s timeless animated masterpiece, “The Lion King.” Despite the live-action adaptation falling short of capturing the same magic, it undeniably struck gold at the box office in 2019, raking in an impressive $1.66 million globally. It’s no wonder there’s a palpable excitement surrounding this latest film, as it delves into Mufasa’s formative years, painting a picture of the king-to-be that we all know and love.
In 2020, Sonic the Hedgehog made its cinematic debut, being one of the last significant releases before the Covid-19 pandemic forced cinema closures. With the original design of the film’s main character, Sonic the Hedgehog, receiving heavy criticism online, many anticipated a flop for this big screen appearance. However, the opposite proved true. Not only did Sonic the Hedgehog shatter records as the biggest domestic opening for a video game adaptation, but it also earned over $320 million globally. The sequel, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, was released in 2022 and outperformed its predecessor, raking in an impressive $405 million in gross revenue.
Who Will Win the Weekend Out of Sonic and Mufasa?
In recent years, there have been several intense box office competitions; however, this time around, no single film appears to be leading decisively. As per Variety’s predictions, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is expected to earn $55-60 million domestically, contrasting with Mufasa’s projected domestic earnings of $50 million. However, when it comes to international box office, Mufasa has an early advantage as it will be released on December 20, while Sonic the Hedgehog 3 won’t hit screens until December 25.
In essence, Sonic might triumph in the U.S. and Canada, but Mufasa is expected to rule at the worldwide box office this weekend. Both movies, highly anticipated for the year, are poised to be extremely successful individually over the upcoming weeks. Determining which movie will be the box office king is a tough call as it stands now. However, with a promising start on Rotten Tomatoes, Sonic has a good chance of stealing the victory from Mufasa’s paws.
