In the past, almost all films derived from video games were poorly received. A handful managed to be passable, but none reached greatness. Lately, however, some video game franchises have been transformed for both big and small screens, earning critical acclaim, financial success, or a mix of both. Among these, the Sonic the Hedgehog series has stood out as one of the best video game movies ever made. One of the screenwriters now dreams of bringing another well-known video game franchise to the big screen.
As a passionate advocate, I’d like to share that Josh Miller, who contributed to the creation of the “Sonic the Hedgehog” films, has confided in IGN his dream for a video game adaptation that he acknowledges will likely remain unrealized due to another team already working on it. What piqued my interest is his longing for a “Legend of Zelda” movie, a wish not entirely surprising given the franchise’s widespread appeal. However, what intrigued me was the specific game within the series he mentioned: “The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker.” Miller expressed that this choice might be considered unconventional, yet it’s precisely this unique title that captivated him…
I believe that, since the movie is currently underway, and we’re not working on it, a potential Zelda film might be another project we could tackle. You know, I recall our fondness for Wind Waker when we played it together. It seems unusual to start a Zelda movie with Wind Waker instead of the traditional Hyrule setting. However, both of us appreciated Wind Waker’s cinematic appeal. So, once they make this Zelda film, perhaps we can consider developing a Wind Waker spin-off.
In my opinion, “The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker” stands out as an exceptional installment within the ongoing series due to its cel-shaded animation style, a visual approach that was unprecedented at the time and remains distinctive even today. Prior to this release, a teaser hinted towards a more realistic direction for the Zelda franchise. However, what we ultimately received was the most cartoonish portrayal of Link and Zelda yet.
To put it simply, The Wind Waker is a thrilling game offering a vast open sea for Link’s journey by sailboat. Unlike traditional Zelda movies, it provides an unexpected twist, which might just be the key to its intrigue.
Regarding the upcoming “The Legend of Zelda” movie, there’s not much solid information available. However, it appears quite unlikely that the movie, helmed by Wes Ball who directed “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” will draw inspiration from “The Wind Waker.” Given that the film is intended to be live-action, a faithful adaptation of “Wind Waker” would most likely necessitate an animated production like the recent “Super Mario Bros” movie.
I’m hoping that the upcoming Legend of Zelda movie turns out fantastic. The games serving as its inspiration have built quite a following, so there’s an eager audience anticipating its release.
