‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’Trailer Brings Keanu Reeves’ Shadow Into the Light

As a gamer who grew up with the iconic Sonic games, I can’t help but feel nostalgic and excited about the upcoming release of Sonic the Hedgehog 3! The introduction of Keanu Reeves as Shadow is an amazing addition to the cast, and it brings back memories of playing Sonic Adventure 2 late into the night.

Sonic is putting on his running shoes for the first trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

In this newest chapter of the series, I find myself stepping into the shoes of Keanu Reeves’ interpretation of Shadow, a character who first graced our screens in Sonic Adventure 2 back in 2001. He’s not like our spiky blue hero Sonic – he’s more brooding and mysterious, but shares some of the same incredible powers.

In April at CinemaCon, Paramount unveiled a sneak peek of Sonic 3. During this presentation, they disclosed that the ending of Sonic 2 had left the villain Dr. Robotnik (portrayed by Jim Carrey) feeling dejected and overweight. However, he regains his motivation when he creates Shadow to defeat Sonic, who is once again voiced by Ben Schwartz.

In 2020, the Sonic series achieved blockbuster status, earning a staggering $319 million worldwide and ranking among the highest-grossing films of a pandemic-affected year. Two years on, Sonic 2 was released and went on to make an impressive $404 million globally. The entire franchise has been directed by Jeff Fowler, with Schwartz appearing alongside James Mardsen as Tom Wachowski, a human ally of Sonic’s. In the sequel, Ben Schnetzer took over the role of the villain, while Idris Elba provided the voice for antagonist Knuckles in 2022. For the Paramount+ series titled Knuckles, Schnetzer reprised his role as the villain, with Adam Pally also joining the cast.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 bows in theaters on Dec. 20.
