‘Sonic the Hedgehog 4’ in the Works for Planned Spring 2027 Release

As a seasoned gamer who’s grown up with Sonic and witnessed his evolution from pixelated glory to the big screen, I can’t help but feel a surge of nostalgia at the news of Sonic the Hedgehog 4. The first two films were a rollercoaster ride of excitement, laughter, and adrenaline that perfectly captured the spirit of the game.

The next movie in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise is ready to hit the ground running.

Currently, Paramount Pictures is working on the production of Sonic the Hedgehog 4, with its third film set to premiere in theaters this coming Friday. The studio aims to launch the newest addition to the franchise, inspired by the well-known Sega video game, in the spring of 2027.

As of now, we don’t have any news about who will be penning or directing the fourth film, nor have we received details regarding its plot. The first three movies were directed by Jeff Fowler, with him also leading the third movie from a script penned by Pat Casey, Josh Miller, and John Whittington.

In the sequel named “Sonic the Hedgehog 3,” Ben Schwartz reappears as the voice of our titular hero, while Jim Carrey takes on a double role, portraying both Dr. Robotnik and his grandfather. The ensemble cast also includes Krysten Ritter, Natasha Rothwell, Shemar Moore, James Marsden, and Tika Sumpter. Additional voices in the film are supplied by Keanu Reeves (as Shadow the Hedgehog), Idris Elba (Knuckles), and Colleen O’Shaughnessey (Tails).

To date, the first two movies in the series have grossed a combined total of over $725 million worldwide at the box office. The franchise, launched with the February 2020 release of Sonic the Hedgehog, has also given birth to the Paramount+ television show Knuckles, which premiered earlier this year.

In his assessment for The Hollywood Reporter regarding Sonic the Hedgehog 3, their main film critic, David Rooney, described it as a skillfully combined, swift-moving fusion of action and humorously absurd scenes, which unfolds in picturesque settings like Tokyo and London.

Variety first reported the news of a fourth movie.
