As a seasoned gamer who has been through multiple console generations, I must say that Sony Japan’s move to restrict pre-orders for the PS5 Pro 30th anniversary edition is a breath of fresh air. After years of dealing with scalpers and the chaos they bring, it’s heartening to see a step taken in the right direction.
Sony Japan is implementing certain limitations on pre-orders for the upcoming PS5 Pro 30th anniversary edition, ensuring that scalpers won’t have an easy time getting their hands on it. The eligibility criteria for placing a pre-order includes having accounts that have logged in a specific amount of time on a PlayStation console.
To clarify, it’s stated on the Japanese PlayStation site that only users with a Japanese PlayStation Network account who have accrued at least 30 hours of playtime on either a PlayStation 4 or 5 between February 2014 and September 19, 2024, are eligible to pre-order the PS5 Pro 30th anniversary edition.
Although it’s not an extremely tight deadline, this move represents progress following our encounters with resellers (scalpers) over the last couple of years, most notably during the launch of the PS5 in 2020.

During a worldwide pandemic that increased manufacturing challenges for hardware and fueled public eagerness to obtain the latest gaming consoles, scalpers prospered. This included a website originally focused on sneakers, which shifted its business to reselling consoles during this period, reportedly shipping over 140,000 units according to Screen Rant.
The high-end PS5 Pro 30th Anniversary model, priced at $1000, is a rare find as only 12,300 units have been produced globally. Consequently, resellers (scalpers) are capitalizing on its scarcity by demanding excessively high prices for those eager to own it.
According to a report by Tom’s Hardware, there are current eBay listings selling the anniversary edition of something for prices ranging from $3000 to an expensive $12,300.
In essence, Japanese PlayStation fans may find some level of security against resellers, but unfortunately, that isn’t the case globally. The secondary market has been attempting to capitalize on eager collectors seeking unique items during the upcoming festive season.
On November 7th, both the standard PlayStation 5 Pro and its Anniversary Edition will hit the market. The standard Pro model will be priced at $700, whereas the Anniversary Edition has an initial retail price of $1000, if you manage to secure a pre-order.
