Sotheby’s to Auction Two Rolex Submariners Owned by ‘Titanic’ Cinematographer Al Giddings

As a seasoned gamer and collector of unique items with intriguing backstories, I can hardly contain my excitement over Sotheby’s upcoming auction featuring two Rolex Submariner watches steeped in the mystique of the Titanic and the iconic film that brought it to life.

In Sotheby’s forthcoming Significant Watch Auction, the auction house plans to showcase two Rolex Submariner Ref. 1680 timepieces, deeply connected to the Titanic – both the historic ship and the 1997 movie.

Estimated to fetch between $20,000 – $40,000 USD is the Rolex Submariner that was both worn and owned by Al Giddings, the cinematographer and co-producer behind the film, Titanic. What adds to this diver reference’s added value is that Giddings had completed 17 dives to the infamous shipwreck while wearing the watch. The timepiece features a classic black dial with a matching bezel, accompanied by an oyster bracelet in steel.

The gold-toned Submariner Ref. 1680/8, hailing from Al Giddings’ personal collection, was also prominently displayed in the movie Titanic, worn by Bill Paxon’s character. This specific reference is further notable for its distinctive black “Nipple Dial” and bezel. The watch was bestowed upon Giddings by T. Walker Lloyd, a retired marine and skilled diver who worked at Rolex during their acquaintance, the cinematographer himself.

On December 6th, the previously mentioned Rolex Submariner timepieces will be auctioned off at Sotheby’s Significant Watch Sale happening in New York.
