‘SOULM8TE’: ‘M3GAN’ Spinoff Reveals Plot Details, 2026 Release

'SOULM8TE': 'M3GAN' Spinoff Reveals Plot Details, 2026 Release

As a seasoned movie buff who has witnessed the evolution of the horror genre over the past few decades, I must say that the upcoming films M3GAN 2.0 and Soulm8te have piqued my interest. The concept of an AI doll turning rogue is nothing new, but the spin-off Soulm8te with its psychosexual thriller twist seems to be a refreshing take on the trope.

In 2023, M3GAN became an instant success for Blumhouse and Universal, with its tale about a self-aware AI doll resonating with both audiences and critics who commended the film for offering something original within the horror genre. The movie grossed over $180 million at the box office, leading to speculation of a sequel, but what viewers didn’t anticipate was a spin-off – news about SOULM8TE took many by surprise. Now, the minds behind the upcoming film have started giving hints about what we can look forward to when it premieres in 2026.

At this stage, not much information has been disclosed about the upcoming film SOULM8TE. We do know that it will feature Lily Sullivan from ‘Evil Dead Rise’, David Rysdahl from ‘Oppenheimer’, and Claudia Doumit from ‘The Boys’. The storyline is still vague, but it has been confirmed that the movie will revolve around a man who gets an android to help him deal with his wife’s passing. Unfortunately, this android develops a dangerous obsession and behaves much like Glenn Close did in ‘Fatal Attraction’. For Allison Williams, who plays Gemma in M3GAN and its follow-ups, and is also a producer on all three films, she explained to Entertainment Weekly that the change in tone between the original film and its spin-off is quite striking.

Shifting from a type of family-oriented horror film (should there be such a category) to something more akin to a psychological-erotic suspenseful tale is quite exciting.

The movie “M3GAN” can be accurately summarized as a “Family-oriented Horror” film. Although it carries a PG-13 rating, it minimizes gore (for the most part), instead focusing on its intriguing concept and suspense to captivate viewers from the outset. For those seeking more intense scenes and adult language, an unrated version was made available, but compared to recent horror releases like “Abigail” and “In a Violent Nature“, “M3GAN” is relatively mild in its content.

‘SOULM8TE’ and ‘M3GAN 2.0’ Could Kick Off An Expanded Universe

As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I can’t help but feel exhilarated by the potential of what’s to come after M3GAN’s box office triumph. This success might just be the green light for not only a sequel, but potentially an entire series of films beyond SOULM8TE that could lay the foundation for a brand new cinematic universe for Blumhouse and Universal Pictures.

Currently, Gerard Johnstone is deeply engrossed in planning for M3GAN 2.0 and isn’t thinking much about the potential growth of the M3GAN cinematic universe at this moment. However, he finds the idea of crafting additional tales within this world intriguing.

“It’s obviously hugely flattering and satisfying to be involved with something that could spawn its own little universe. Universal Pictures had its own universe with all of its monster movie characters, so it’s not unheard of. It’s probably also the fact that we are living in an age where A.I. is so prevalent. There are so many stories to be told.”

At present, we’re looking forward to unveiling SOULM8TE and an upgraded version of M3GAN, tentatively set for release on June 27, 2025. As for what lies ahead? We’ll be sure to share any new developments as they become available in the upcoming months.
