As a long-time resident of one of the affected states, I am deeply moved by the devastation caused by Hurricanes Helene and Milton. The arts community has always been a beacon of hope and resilience in times of darkness, and it’s heartening to see organizations like South Arts stepping up to support us during these challenging times.
South Arts has established an assistance and recuperation program to support artists affected by Hurricanes Helene and Milton, which devastated numerous southeastern communities, resulting in the tragic loss of 229 lives across seven states and causing an estimated $97.5 billion USD in damages.
This program is designed to aid media personnel, artists, authors, and filmmakers, not just temporarily but also in the long-term recovery process. This will particularly benefit these creative professionals across Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. As Susie Surkamer, the president and CEO of South Arts, stated, “This is a crucial juncture for our region’s cultural scenery. We are offering immediate aid through this initiative, but we also understand that there is still significant work to be done.
Various nonprofit organizations from the region have united in these endeavors, among them Alternate Roots, Mid Atlantic Arts, National Performance Network, and South Arts – an organization founded in 1975 to help artists, foster cultural exchange, and bring art to underrepresented communities throughout Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee.
Candidates should be at least 18 years old, currently involved in any field such as craftwork, literature, film, theater, traditional arts, or visual arts. For further details, check out South Arts’ website.
