South Korea’s CJ 4DPLEX Names Company Insider Jun Bang as CEO

As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for immersive experiences, I find myself utterly thrilled by the recent appointment of Jun Bang as the CEO of CJ 4DPLEX. His extensive background in revolutionizing cinematic experiences and his knack for innovation have caught my attention, much like how a well-crafted quest captivates an avid adventurer.

In a recent announcement on Wednesday, Seoul-based cinema technology innovator CJ 4DPLEX appointed Jun Bang as their new chief executive officer. This decision recognizes Bang’s significant role in driving the company’s continued success in transforming the cinematic experience not just in South Korea, but globally.

In his latest role at CJ 4DPLEX, which he joined in 2018, Bang held the position of Chief Operating Officer for content and marketing. In this role, he managed investments in original content, handled theatrical distribution, and supervised global marketing operations. He played a significant part in growing the company’s alternative content business, releasing around 20 original films each year, including concert films from popular K-pop artists and big U.S. acts such as Coldplay’s “Music of the Spheres”, along with live theatrical broadcasts of major events like the Korean Baseball Organization’s playoff series, presented in the immersive ScreenX format.

Prior to heading the Content Division at CJ 4DPLEX, he held a position as the Senior Director of Content Business Innovation. In this role, he managed investment and distribution strategies, in addition to supervising ScreenX and 4DX studio operations. Furthermore, his efforts were crucial in establishing the ScreenX VFX Production Studio, an innovative space housing approximately 100 visual artists. This facility has expanded the ScreenX format’s content library, allowing it to accommodate major Hollywood blockbusters and local hit films from Japan and Korea.

Assuming the position of CEO at CJ 4DPLEX, I’m thrilled about guiding the company through its upcoming phase during a crucial time in cinema entertainment,” expressed Bang. “Given the surge our theaters have experienced lately, we plan to vigorously grow every aspect of our business as more moviegoers are drawn to 4DX and ScreenX experiences globally.

4DPLEX offers two groundbreaking cinema technologies aimed at revolutionizing the movie-going experience. The 4DX format delivers an immersive, multi-sensory experience by synchronizing motion-based seating with special effects such as wind, water, aromas, and vibrations, thereby enhancing the viewer’s connection to the on-screen action. There are approximately 800 4DX theaters worldwide, spanning 70 different countries. The ScreenX format expands selected movie scenes onto the side walls of the theater, creating a panoramic viewing experience that extends 270 degrees. To date, there are around 420 ScreenX theaters in 40 countries, offering an immersive virtual reality-like experience with cinema-quality resolution.

4DPlex, a subsidiary of CJ CGV, falls under the broader umbrella of the CJ Group – an organization that also houses the dynamic entertainment company, CJ ENM.

The appointment of Bang was praised by Don Savant, who serves as both CEO and president of CJ 4DPLEX America. In his statement, Savant highlighted Jun’s role in creating innovative content alternatives and enhancing our visual effects (VFX) abilities. He emphasized that these advancements have significantly reshaped the cinema industry, which is currently striving to distinguish itself from home entertainment and streaming services.
