Soviet Cinema Legend Inspires Artist in Exile in ‘I Will Revenge This World With Love – S. Parajanov’ (Exclusive Trailer)

As a passionate admirer of cinematic visionaries who defy societal norms and government oppression, I eagerly anticipate the premiere of “I Will Revenge This World With Love – S. Parajanov” at this year’s Venice Film Festival.

The influence and tribute to Soviet filmmaker Sergei Parajanov is the main focus of “I Will Avenge This World with Love – S. Parajanov,” a fresh documentary directed by Zara Jian that will debut at this year’s Venice Film Festival.

Exclusive first look: Trailer for a movie revealed by The Hollywood Reporter, featuring a diverse group of esteemed directors like Atom Egoyan, Tarsem Singh, and Emir Kusturica, along with other talented artists such as Chulpan Khamatova (a Russian actress living in exile), sharing their personal experiences and artistic influences derived from Parajanov’s cinema.

Born in Georgia, Parajanov made a groundbreaking impact on global cinema with his film “Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors” (1965). This marked his departure from the socialist realism demanded by Soviet cinema, instead opting for a more innovative, poetic style in storytelling through visuals. His work had a profound influence on independent and art house cinema, with films like “Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors” and “The Colour of Pomegranates” (1969) frequently cited among the best ever made by Sight & Sound. However, Parajanov faced criticism from Soviet authorities due to his personal life, political views, and particularly his support for Ukrainian nationalism. As a result, he was imprisoned twice.

Jian employs Parajanov’s life and artistic endeavors as a lens to examine ongoing geopolitical conflicts, serving as a beacon of hope and creativity for artists worldwide who face suppression or censorship from those holding power.

“Jian stated that their intention for the movie was to feature global heroes, symbolizing the far-reaching influence of Paradjanov beyond geographical boundaries and time periods, not only during his association with the Soviet region and its era.”

“S. Parajanov’s ‘I Will Revenge This World With Love’ will have its first screening at the 2024 Venice Film Festival, showcased within the Venice Classics section.”
