Spider-Man 4’s Casting May Finally Fix Hulk’s Biggest MCU Problem!

According to a report from Nexus Point News, there are whispers that the upcoming movie “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” could bring back Mark Ruffalo’s character, Bruce Banner (the Hulk). However, it is essential to note that this speculation has not been verified. If true, this development might address a significant issue concerning the Hulk that has long been a challenge for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

According to NPN, the character Hulk is expected to have a substantial part in both “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars,” directed by the Russo Brothers. This implies a major role for Hulk before his future appearances. However, it’s important to remember this information with a bit of skepticism, as previous rumors about a standalone film titled “World War Hulk” in “Captain America: Brave New World” didn’t come true. If such an appearance in “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” were to occur, it could be just what Hulk needs.

The Russo Bros. Sent Hulk On A ‘Nerfed’ Arc

Fundamentally, the essence of the Hulk, rooted in its comic book beginnings, revolves around the character’s Jekyll and Hyde-like persona. Dr. Bruce Banner is a virtuous, intelligent scientist who transforms into an enraged, devastating beast. In portraying both Banner and the Hulk, Mark Ruffalo has delivered an exceptional performance, capturing Banner’s intellect, his green-tinted anger, and the regret that Banner feels over his transformation.

In contrast to other original Avengers such as Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Black Widow, and even Hawkeye who have had their own movies or series focusing on their individual journeys, the Hulk, portrayed by Mark Ruffalo, has not been given a solo storyline within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Instead, the Hulk’s character development has been largely overshadowed, and even his adversaries like Abomination, Red Hulk, and The Leader have been introduced in other heroes’ films rather than being associated with the Hulk himself.

A significant challenge arises from the Russo Brothers, who previously (and openly) reduced Hulk’s power in their Marvel Cinematic Universe films “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame,” as they were unsure how to handle him effectively. Unless there’s been a sudden change of heart since “Avengers: Endgame,” it seems unlikely that this approach will alter for their upcoming Avengers projects.

Why We Need Savage Hulk Back

The Professor Hulk portrayal of the character, as played by Ruffalo, isn’t fundamentally flawed. It provides an opportunity for both size and strength, along with warmth and depth, which makes for a compelling performance. On the other hand, Savage Hulk is the most well-known version of the character, playing a significant role in the ongoing struggle that defines him.

The Savage Hulk isn’t just intriguing due to his frequent ‘Hulk smash!’ outbursts; rather, it’s the combination of his immense power and uncontrollable rage that makes him fascinating. This is because the Hulk can be a valuable asset but also poses a threat to the team. Using the Hulk always involves risk, and Black Widow’s unique ability to soothe him significantly reduces that risk. The internal struggle of Banner, his remorse for his actions as Hulk, and his complex connection with his monstrous alter ego add further dramatic depth to the character. Keeping these aspects in mind can help guide decisions involving the Hulk.

It’s high time for Hulk to take on an interesting role, whether that means returning to Savage Hulk, transforming into World Breaker Hulk, becoming Maestro Hulk or Devil Hulk, “Joe Fixit,” or anything else that breaks free from his current state of being smart but weak and sidelined. Here’s to wishing that he will appear in Spider-Man: Brand New Day as something other than Professor Hulk, before he is reduced to lifeless green matter at the start of Avengers: Doomsday.
