'Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse' Finds Its New Directors

As a dedicated fan of the Spider-Verse saga, I couldn’t be more thrilled about Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson taking the helm for the upcoming finale, “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.” These two gentlemen have been an integral part of the franchise since its inception, and their passion for Miles Morales’ journey is evident in every frame of the films they’ve worked on.

The last movie in the critically praised Spider-Verse film series has secured its directors. Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson are set to direct Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verses.

According to an exclusive update from Deadline, it has been revealed that the Sony Animation project will enlist key members who have been part of the Spider-Verse family to direct the concluding film of their trilogy, which was initially set in motion by Phil Lord and Chris Miller. Notably, while the identities of the fresh directors may not match the fame of Lord and Miller, they have been involved with the franchise since its beginning.

Persichetti and Thompson expressed their immense joy and privilege in being involved from the start of Miles’ journey, and they are thrilled about shaping the final chapter of his story. The passion and dedication put into every moment of this project has been incredibly inspiring. They believe they have created a highly satisfying ending, and they eagerly anticipate fans enjoying it – they are giving their all!

Who Are The New ‘Spider-Verse’ Directors and What Do We Know About The Film Thus Far?

The pairing of Persichetti and Thompson have played significant roles in the popular Spider-Man series. In 2018, Persichetti was part of the award-winning directing team for the acclaimed film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and later served as an executive producer on its sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which was released in 2023. Meanwhile, Thompson, serving as a production designer, worked on Into the Spider-Verse, and later collaborated with Joaquim Dos Santos and Kemp Powers to direct the sequel, Across the Spider-Verse.

Phil Lord, Chris Miller, Amy Pascal, Avi Arad are coming back for the series in their producer roles, with Jinko Gotoh also joining the team of producers. Aditya Sood and Christina Steinberg will oversee the project as executive producers, while Jessica Berri will assist as a co-producer on the movie.

Beyond their involvement in this specific film series, Persichetti and Thompson have a rich history of contributions to the animation industry. Thompson’s portfolio includes an impressive array of background and landscape work on popular titles like The Legend of Tarzan, The PowerPuff Girls Movie, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Samurai Jack, and more. On the other hand, Persichetti has been instrumental in the story development and visual design for renowned films such as Hercules, Mulan, Tarzan, Shrek 2, Puss in Boots, and even wrote the screenplay for the critically acclaimed 2015 adaptation of The Little Prince.

Furthermore, just as Phil Lord and Chris Miller expressed, these two gentlemen have consistently contributed significantly to the triumph, aesthetic appeal, and overall ambiance of the renowned Spider-Verse series. In their words to Deadline:

As a movie enthusiast, I can’t help but feel the indelible touch of Bob and Justin in every scene of Miles’ last adventure. Their unwavering dedication to his journey is evident in each frame, illuminating the screen with their creative brilliance. Collaborating with visionaries like them is a truly rewarding experience, as they consistently push boundaries and deliver exceptional work. I can’t wait to join forces with Bob and Justin once more, to craft a fitting and fulfilling end to this captivating story.

Even though specifics about the final movie are being tightly guarded, given rumors of them discarding earlier plans for the delayed production, it’s been confirmed that the screenplay was penned by Lord and Miller along with David Callaham. The previous film saw Miles Morales (portrayed by Shameik Moore) encountering his Earth-42 counterpart who had transformed into the villainous The Prowler. It seems likely that Miles will have to confront this version of himself, potentially also facing Uncle Andrew, while awaiting discovery and rescue by Gwen Stacy and other Spider-People. However, we’ll just have to watch and find out once production takes off!
