Spirit Halloween Takes Jab at ‘SNL’ With “Irrelevant 50-Year-Old TV Show” Costume Following Sketch

As a long-time fan of both Spirit Halloween and Saturday Night Live, I must say that this playful back-and-forth between the two iconic entities has brought me immense joy! It’s like watching a friendly dance between giants in their respective realms.

Spirit Halloween isn’t letting Saturday Night Live get the last word.

During the debut of their 50th season, a popular sketch comedy program satirized a well-known seasonal store specializing in Halloween costumes and décor for the month of October. In response to this, the store’s official account, previously known as Twitter, decided to counter the show’s humor.

I can’t help but boast about our knack for resurrecting the past,” the post declared, accompanied by a picture of a costume celebrating SNL’s monumental 50th season. The tag on the costume read, “Outdated 5-decade-old television program,” featuring “antiquated references, obscure cast members, and dwindling viewership numbers.

In response to a fictitious advertisement about their store on NBC’s program, Spirit Halloween – the seasonal retailer that often sets up shop in empty stores during the creepy month – spoke out.

Though the stock market thrives, small town America faces hardships,” quips Heidi Gardner from SNL, her voice laden with gravity. “Deserted shops, abandoned businesses, vacant parking spaces paint a dismal picture. In tough times, it’s all too easy to feel overlooked and unsupported.

“But help is on the way, because when others leave, we show up,” she adds.

Instead of perceiving it as a “forlorn town” or a “deserted Kmart,” SNL’s Chloe Fineman suggests viewing it as a place filled with “Spirit,” specifically, a Spirit Halloween.

In his false commercial, Gardner goes on to say, “Since 1983, Spirit Halloween has been aiding our financially strained neighborhoods. We do this by occupying any empty buildings across the nation for a span of six weeks, before moving on.

Fineman points out that Spirit Halloween not only caters to these communities but also offers items like itchy wigs, disposable fog machines, and slightly altered character costumes to steer clear of legal issues. This way, they’re providing essential goods for the most vulnerable communities.

Saturday Night Live (SNL) satirically criticized the store’s employees and its temporary business approach. “We’re not just pouring money into vacant structures,” Gardner quips, “we’re putting it into people. By offering six-week jobs to some of America’s most affected deviants.

By November 1st, we’ll no longer be here, and everything will end up in a trash bin,” Michael Longfellow sums up.

Jean Smart served as the host for the debut episode of NBC’s fifty-year-old comedy variety series, featuring musical performer Jelly Roll.
