Liz Gateley, who previously led development at Spotify Studios’ original division, recently decided to depart from the company to establish Damsel Media.
The freshly established enterprise specializes in creating content for television, movies, and digital platforms, with a primary focus on the younger demographic known as Generation Z. Prior to joining Spotify, Gateley served as the head of programming at Lifetime.
Gateley has produced various content such as Laguna Beach, The Hills, 16 & Pregnant, Teen Mom, Teen Wolf, Surviving R. Kelly, Learning to Skateboard in a War Zone (If You’re a Girl), and the scripted series You. This content earned an Oscar for documentary short in 2020, while Gateley also developed the scripted series You.

Gateley is responsible for creating shows like Laguna Beach, The Hills, 16 & Pregnant, Teen Mom, Teen Wolf, Surviving R. Kelly, Learning to Skateboard in a War Zone (If You’re a Girl), and the scripted series You. Among these, the documentary short they produced won an Oscar in 2020, and their work also led to the development of the scripted series You.
Gateley began working at Spotify in February 2019, becoming a part of the initial podcast production studios team. She acquired “Wind of Change,” a collaborative production with Pineapple and Crooked Media, as an exclusive original for Spotify. This podcast went on to win the prestigious 2020 Webby Award for the best podcast of the year.
As a dedicated fan, I spearheaded the strategic collaboration between Spotify and Warner Bros./DC that birthed an array of captivating podcasts, one of them being “Batman Unburied.” This masterpiece was skillfully translated into eight languages and rolled out across nine countries, ultimately claiming the top spot on the Spotify podcast charts.
Moreover, the collaboration encompassed a couple more series such as “Harley Quinn & The Joker: Sound Mind,” featuring Christina Ricci, and “The Riddler: Secrets in the Dark,” headlined by Hasan Minhaj. Additionally, Gateley cooperated with Kim Kardashian on her podcast titled “The System: The Case of Kevin Keith.
Gateley has been instrumental in Spotify’s recent venture into video content, spearheading the production of “What Now? With Trevor Noah,” now in its second season. Moreover, Gateley was the driving force behind the establishment of Spotify Pictures, an initiative that transforms podcasts and intellectual properties from the platform into a visual format, debuting “RapCaviar Presents” as a documentary series.
Over the past six years at Spotify, I’ve been incredibly fortunate to collaborate with some truly gifted individuals and learn a tremendous amount while working on projects alongside innovative creators in a rapidly expanding, vibrant environment. Now, it’s time for me to rekindle my love for narrative storytelling and channel my passion into creating premium content tailored for younger audiences with Damsel Media.
Gateley has teamed up with CAA and Tara Senior & Todd Weinstein from Weinstein/Senior. Damsel Media is collaborating with 32 Flavors and Haymaker East for its initial two ventures; the casting process is currently in progress for both projects.
