As a film enthusiast who’s spent countless hours binge-watching global cinematic masterpieces, I must say that the prospect of David Fincher taking on an American version of Squid Game is nothing short of intriguing. The idea might seem like a match made in heaven for those who appreciate both directors’ distinct storytelling styles. However, the confusion surrounding Hwang Dong-hyuk’s non-involvement in this potential project leaves me scratching my head, much like the enigmatic games themselves.
It’s not common to hear David Fincher and mentioned together in a sentence. So, fans were both puzzled and excited when it was announced that the director of ‘Fight Club’ and ‘Seven’ would take charge of an American spin-off from Netflix’s popular South Korean series. Yet, no one seemed as surprised as Hwang Dong-hyuk, who stated he had not been informed about the spin-off himself.
In an interview with GamesRadar+, the creator of Squid Game, Hwang Dong-hyuk, mentioned that he hasn’t received any official word regarding a potential American series spin-off by director David Fincher. Although Netflix has yet to confirm this news, reports from Deadline have given credibility to these rumors. When asked about his thoughts on the new adaptation, Hwang Dong-hyuk expressed it as being difficult to comment due to the uncertainties surrounding Fincher’s involvement in the project.

If he truly creates a spin-off of Squid Game, I, as a passionate fan, am eagerly anticipating the unfolding events. In truth, I can barely contain my excitement to discover his plans for it.
‘Squid Game’ Season 2 Is Coming Very Soon
In post-production right now is the second installment of the popular series “Squid Game,” and fans are eagerly anticipating its release. The first season was a massive success for Netflix, bringing in an estimated $900 million and topping international viewing charts. Given its profitability, it’s no surprise that additional seasons were greenlit. In this upcoming season, we find our protagonist Seong Gi-hun (played by Lee Jung-jae) back in the games. However, this time he’s not just playing for survival; he aims to rescue his fellow players and put an end to these brutal games once and for all. The new season promises even more shocking plot twists. After each game, the players will return to their recognizable dormitory, where they will have a vote on whether to continue participating or to leave. Those who make the incorrect choice risk losing their lives, causing an already tense atmosphere to become even more fraught with danger.
Although Season 2 of Squid Game hasn’t premiered on Netflix yet, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has already mapped out the series’ end. It’s been announced that the show will conclude after its third season. This could mean that our protagonist Gi-hun manages to survive the upcoming games, or his continued participation in the arena might be stretched across the final two seasons. We’ll have to wait and see. However, according to Dong-hyuk, the last two seasons will primarily focus on Gi-hun’s journey, as he confirmed. He elaborated:
As I pondered over the perfect conclusion for Season 3, it struck me that this could be our finale. I felt that by crafting the tale around Squid Game and focusing on Gi-hun’s character arc, I had managed to convey all I intended to express. In my opinion, there was no need for more stories from hereon.
