‘Squid Game’ Director Loved Filming the Pentathlon Game in Season 2

As a cinephile with over three decades of film-watching under my belt, I must say that Hwang Dong-hyuk’s choice for the most fun game to shoot in Squid Game Season 2 was quite unexpected but utterly delightful. Having grown up playing many of those games myself, it’s a joy to see them brought to life on the screen with such intricate detail and suspense.

The pentathlon, with its five mini-games, offered not only an exciting challenge for both the actors and the production team but also provided a unique opportunity to showcase various games that Korean children grew up playing, including those that Hwang himself was familiar with. It’s always fascinating to see how a director’s personal experiences can influence and elevate a project.

Now, let me leave you with a little joke: I heard they’re planning a ‘Squid Game’ spin-off where the games are all played underwater. You know, in case the contestants haven’t had enough trouble breathing already!

The following article contains MAJOR spoilers for Squid Game Season 2.

In a recent reveal, the creator and mastermind behind Squid Game, Hwang Dong-hyuk, who is responsible for its writing, directing, and overall production, has shared which game from Season 2 of the Netflix survival thriller was his favorite to film.

Instead of anticipating the revival of “Red Light, Green Light” with a bolder Seong Gi-hun, it turns out that Hwang has an unexpected perspective. The children’s game he prefers to depict on his Netflix series is not the one where a large doll detects slight movements and results in a player’s downfall.

In an interview with Variety, Hwang shared updates on the comeback of Squid Game, but as expected, he remained tight-lipped about the crucial plot points. To prevent any Season 2 spoilers from leaking for nearly four years, this was his approach. However, he did offer some insights into the production aspects of Season 2, such as fresh character developments and the game he found most exciting to design and film.

I’d describe it as the pentathlon. What made it unique was not just the difficulty in shooting, but also my personal preference for it when we finally wrapped up filming. The appeal increased even more because each round encompasses five smaller games.

Just like last season, I aimed to highlight traditional Korean children’s games that many of us grew up with, including the ones I personally played. The fact that I managed to present five distinct games in one round made it incredibly rewarding to film. In my opinion, the pentathlon was undoubtedly the most fulfilling game to capture on camera.

In Season 2 of Squid Game, Seong Gi-hun is not particularly content with the winnings he received for winning the contest in Season 1. Player 456 intends to avenge the deaths of his fellow players by confronting those who organize the game, offering financial relief upon survival. As events unfold, Gi-hun finds himself drawn back into the game with the aim of taking down its organizers from within. However, the revised rules will present fresh obstacles for him to overcome.

‘Squid Game’ Season 3: Coming Soon With a Few Changes

Hwang discussed some insights about the upcoming finale of the series in Season 3, which is scheduled for release around 2025. The showrunner has been rather secretive about the details, but he did reveal that some hints are hidden within the clip displayed during the credits of the final episode from Season 2. In this clip, several characters notice a male version of the well-known “Red Light, Green Light” doll, with two such dolls appearing in Season 3. Hwang added, “If you paid attention to the hidden clip that follows the ending credits of the last episode from Season 2, it will provide a slight hint about where Season 3 might lead us. For now, that’s all I can share.”

The creator has confirmed that Season 3 will continue focusing on Gi-hun, his relentless pursuit of defeating The Front Man (Oh Young-il from Season 2). If Gi-hun was angry about the game before, you can only imagine how he feels now after witnessing more friends being trapped in these dangerous games again. As Hwang puts it, “We’ll see where Gi-hun stands and what choices he’ll make. Will he continue his mission? Or will he give up or persevere? In the beginning of Season 3, we’ll encounter Gi-hun at a crucial turning point.”

The showrunner confirmed that Season 3 will explore Gi-hun’s journey to defeat The Front Man, and after seeing more friends get hurt again, he’s probably really upset. We’ll find out if Gi-hun will keep going or give up in the start of Season 3 when he faces a major decision.

As the series progresses, you can expect an even more engaging and captivating narrative. Each new episode will bring improvement, making it more absorbing and enjoyable. Stick with it right until the final episode!
