As a passionate fan of Squid Game, I have to admit that the second season has been nothing short of a rollercoaster ride. The introduction of fresh faces like Cho Hyun-ju (Player 120) adds an exciting layer to the already intriguing narrative.
I was particularly drawn to Hyun-ju’s story, not just because she’s a former special forces soldier, but because she represents a marginalized group in Korean society – transgender women. Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk’s decision to include such a character is commendable and timely.
However, the casting of Park Sung-hoon, a cisgender male actor, as Hyun-ju has sparked debate among fans. While I understand the concerns regarding opportunities for transgender actors in Korea, I believe that Hyun-ju’s character, regardless of who portrays her, brings much-needed attention to the issues faced by the LGBTQ+ community in Korean society.
In a lighter note, I can’t help but wonder what Gi-hun would think if he knew that his rebellion had inadvertently become a beacon for social change! Maybe next season we’ll see him leading protests instead of playing deadly games!
The highly acclaimed Netflix show, Squid Game, garnered massive success in its initial season, receiving accolades for its distinctive theme, surreal visuals, and sharp social critique. As audiences eagerly await the second season’s release, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk faced the task of incorporating 455 brand-new characters, each with a compelling backstory. One of the most buzzed-about newcomers is a transgender player, whose presence has ignited discussions and debate.
Stepping back into the thrilling world of life-or-death contests, Squid Game Season 2 presents a variety of characters, including a young pregnant woman and an elderly mother. A fresh competitor is Cho Hyun-ju (Player 120), a transgender woman and ex-special forces soldier who requires money for gender-affirming surgery, demonstrates immense kindness, and becomes the first to rally with Gi-hun’s rebellion as the story progresses. When asked about the significance of this portrayal, Hwang explained to Decider that he aimed to emphasize the importance of representation in an industry notorious for its lack of it.
In the popular series “Squid Game,” I perceived the participants as individuals often overlooked or underprivileged in society, not only economically but also socially. One character who embodied this was Ali, a foreigner working in Korea – a group that mirrors many minority communities within Korean society.
In contemporary Korean culture, transgender women like Hyun-ju face significant societal challenges and are often less accepted. This is why I developed the character of Hyun-ju as a male to female transgender woman.
The Controversy Around Park Sung-hoon’s Casting in ‘Squid Game’ Season 2
In his dedication to fostering awareness and comprehension in South Korea, Hwang Dong-hyuk encountered no obstacles, but he openly acknowledged his struggle in locating a Korean actress who identifies as transgender to portray the character of Cho Hyun-ju. To TV Guide, he candidly disclosed this challenge.
Initially, we were conducting our investigation, and I considered using a genuine trans actor for the project. However, when we looked into Korea, we found very few actors who openly identify as trans or even gay. Sadly, in present-day Korean society, the LGBTQ community remains largely marginalized and underrepresented, which is incredibly disheartening.
As a movie enthusiast, I’ve always admired Park Sung-hoon’s acting prowess, from his breakout role in “A Frozen Flower” to his recent groundbreaking performance in Netflix’s “The Glory.” It was this versatile talent that caught the director’s eye when choosing an actor for Hyun-ju. While it might not have been the perfect fit, casting a cisgender male actor is a step towards promoting and normalizing transgender representation and acceptance in Korea.
Through the development of a character similar to Hyun-ju and by showcasing her decisions, behaviors, and overall demeanor within the game, I aim to shed light on the contemporary issues we’re grappling with.
The news that Park Sung-hoon was chosen to play a transgender role sparked varied responses. Some people voiced worries over limited roles for transgender actors in Korean showbiz, while others applauded the character’s inclusion as progress towards better representation. Despite the debate, Hwang remains hopeful about the implications of his decision.
