As a long-time fan of intense, nail-biting competition series, I can confidently say that “Squid Game 2″ has outdone itself with the introduction of the brutal yet intriguingly complex game called Mingle. Having grown up playing Musical Chairs and Red Light, Green Light, it’s both fascinating and horrifying to see these childhood games twisted into deadly contests in this dystopian world.

The hit series ‘Squid Game’ is returning, promising an array of chilling new games. Expect these games to be copied – in a similarly suspenseful manner – by numerous content creators on YouTube, Twitch, and Netflix’s reality show spinoff. The initial season revived familiar childhood games like Tug-of-War and Red Light, Green Light, but it also highlighted the iconic playground game and introduced the sugary yet lethal Dalgona to global audiences.
In “Squid Game 2,” some old games resurface, but there are fewer fresh contests for the characters to engage in as they strive towards the ₩4.56 billion winnings. Among the standouts is the game called Mingle, a thrilling new element added to the series’ roster of trials, which intentionally puts alliances against one another, heightening the competition among players.
What are the rules to Mingle and why is it so brutal?
For those unfamiliar, Mingle is similar in concept to the popular kid’s game Musical Chairs. In this TV show, all participants enter a large, spinning room designed around a carousel that spins rapidly, creating a disorienting feeling, while an unusually cheerful tune plays. When the music stops, one of the game hosts shouts out a number (ranging from 2 to 10, and possibly more). The contestants must then quickly form groups according to this number.
Right from the get-go, it’s evident that this game mirrors the structure of “Squid Game.” Beyond its seemingly straightforward rules, it repeatedly pushes participants to confront critical, life-or-death dilemmas concerning their connections. This ordeal uncovers each player’s true nature in profound ways. Occasionally, those who were once allies will shun their companions if the selected number compels them to be excluded. If these shunned players survive, they might be compelled to rejoin their betraying friends during a round needing larger groups. The power dynamics within this lethal carousel are never more evident than here.
In this game, contestants must navigate their teams safely behind rotating doors that circle the room in a counter-clockwise direction. If any team member is left outside, they are eliminated. As the game progresses, players come to understand that the designers have strategically placed a limited number of doors, ensuring a sufficient number of competitors meet elimination. This chilling, fashionable, and story-driven game, Mingle, is one of the standout moments in “Squid Game” Season 2.
