Although Season 1 of “Squid Game” could’ve been a self-contained story, the finale of Season 2 made it obvious that there was more to unfold. The protagonist, Seong Gi-hun (played by Lee Jung-jae), initiates a rebellion against the people running the lethal games which have already taken hundreds of lives. What Gi-hun doesn’t initially understand is that Hwang In-ho, also known as the Front Man (portrayed by Lee Byung-hun), has been participating alongside him all along and plans to crush the rebellion before it gains any traction. Many lives are lost, including that of Gi-hun’s friend, Cho Sang-woo (played by Park Hae-soo).
Leaving fans on edge at the season finale was quite a suspenseful move, but luckily, they only had to wait six months to find out what happens next. The third and final season of “Squid Game,” which is set to debut on June 27th, has finally unveiled its first trailer. As always with “Squid Game,” there are many subtle symbolic hints that will keep viewers guessing. Although we can’t predict every game or plot twist that might unfold, speculation is part of the excitement for longtime fans of this series.
In the final stages, here are some intriguing points that may have slipped your notice in the Squid Game Season 3 preview.
Player 246 is possibly alive
In the ambiguous ending of “Squid Game” Season 2, numerous fan theories have surfaced regarding the events in Season 3, one of the most prevalent being that character Player 246, Park Gyeong-seok (played by Lee Jin-wook), may not have perished during Gi-hun’s uprising. Despite being shot, it remains uncertain where exactly he was wounded, leading many to speculate that the guard who spared his life could be Kang No-eul (Park Gyu-young). This is because it’s believed that she knows Gyeong-seok’s backstory — his attempt to accumulate enough money for his daughter’s medical treatment due to blood cancer. The trailer for “Squid Game” Season 3 appears to support this theory.
Intriguingly brief, there’s a scene where someone, presumably our beloved characters Gyeong-seok and No-eul, is seen covered in blood, possibly receiving a scan behind the ear. It’s challenging to discern facial features due to the quick pace, and it’s unclear who’s wielding the scanner. However, given the context of their story, it seems plausible that No-eul might have shot Gyeong-seok in a survivable spot and is now trying to transport him to a safer zone, with the ultimate goal of getting him off the island to be reunited with his daughter.
From Season 2, Episode 1, it is clear that the games monitor players: Gi-hun takes a tracker from behind his ear, indicating that those running the games closely watch participants. No-eul might assist Gyeong-seok in removing his internal tracker, leading others to believe he’s deceased and enabling him to escape undetected.
Why does the Front Man have his mask on?
During the uprising, the Leader deceives Gi-hun, going so far as to murder one of their comrades. Later on, they encounter each other, with the Leader coldly taking the life of Sang-woo in front of Gi-hun. This act suggests that the Leader has essentially eliminated his old identity (Oh Young-il, his alias from the games) and returned to being the Leader fully, as evidenced by his reappearance in the Season 3 trailer, back in the control room and wearing his mask once more.
Why continue wearing the mask when everyone else already knows who he is? Given that the soldiers are aware of his role, they would have spared him at any moment. However, it seems that he wishes to remain incognito from Gi-hun and the other players, considering their previous rebellion. Moreover, the Front Man might also want to conceal his identity from the VIPs who just appeared, for reasons of safety and security.
It seems highly likely that the Front Man is just a performer, enamored by the striking appearance of his mask, which he finds both stylish and ominous. Given the effort put into creating it, it makes sense for him to don it.
The two dolls from the Season 2 finale are MIA in the trailer
Following Gi-hun’s tragic encounter with his friend’s demise in Season 2’s climax, viewers are given an additional scene as a sneak peek into the last season. The post-credits scene from “Squid Game” Season 2 showcases competitors entering an arena where the familiar doll from Red Light, Green Light appears, but this time she is accompanied by a boy doll named Cheol-su. The two dolls stand opposite each other, implying that this could be one of the final challenges the players must overcome in the upcoming season.
It was expected that the trailer would provide a hint about the game these dolls will feature in after such a significant revelation, but it fails to do so. Instead, the trailer depicts the survivors participating in another game, this time within a labyrinth. It could be tag, hide-and-seek, or something else, but it’s clear that they are playing in a distinct location from the one shown during the post-credits sequence.
Given the brief running time of the “Squid Game” Season 3 trailer, it won’t provide extensive buildup. Unless Netflix releases another trailer beforehand with more glimpses of the dolls, we’ll likely have to wait until June 27 to learn more about them.
Did they foreshadow the shaman lady’s message to Gi-hun?
In the second season of “Squid Game”, a significant line is spoken by San-nyeo, also known as Player 044 (Chae Cook-hee), or the shaman lady. At a gathering called Mingle, Gi-hun enters a room with San-nyeo and Jun-hee, who is pregnant. San-nyeo gazes at Jun-hee’s belly and then addresses Gi-hun, saying, “You have lived beyond your expected lifespan for a reason. You were brought here for a purpose.
The significance of this sequence in the Season 3 trailer is heightened by the closing shot. We witness a troubled gaze from Gi-hun and a tearful Jun-hee. The screen fades to black, and we hear an infant’s cries. This implies that Jun-hee will deliver a child during Season 3, but it remains unclear if the newborn will be ensnared in the games like other players.
It seems plausible that San-nyeo’s message to Gi-hun implies a deeper motive for his reentry into the games: to save the child’s life. In a pinch, Gi-hun might be forced to give up his own life so that the child can escape the island and claim the prize money.
Female VIPs are here for Squid Game Season 3
In “Squid Game” Season 1, the wealthy individuals who sport golden animal masks as a signature style make an appearance midway through the games on the island to observe them. These characters were not present during Season 2, but the trailer for Season 3 hints at their return with some unexpected twists in their grandeur.
In Season 1, the VIPs were predominantly male, but it seems that powerful women are set to join the action in Season 3, as suggested by the trailer. One scene shows several VIPs at a table being served food, and at least two women can be seen. Another shot depicts several VIPs standing and observing something, with one woman dressed in red visible among them.
The act of suppressing others to advance one’s own wealth has no distinction between genders. Reddit user Routine-Crew8651 highlighted this issue when they compared the sight of women being deprived of fundamental human rights, food, and healthcare alongside a wealthy heiress flaunting her $2 million jewelry collection to scenes from the Netflix series Squid Game. In essence, it seems that not only are women capable of doing everything men can do, but they can also embody the role of ruthless capitalists who find joy in others’ misery.
Religious themes permeate the Season 3 trailer
The trailer for the Squid Game is incomplete without its heavy symbolism, and it begins by portraying Gi-hun as a figure reminiscent of Christ. After being brought back in a coffin to the surviving contestants, he miraculously opens his eyes once more – a scene strikingly similar to Jesus’ resurrection. It’s fitting that this event should occur to Gi-hun, given his past skepticism towards Jesus; ironically, he now appears as a potential savior for those still participating in the games. In Season 1, Gi-hun expressed disbelief in Jesus, but now his role has taken an unexpected twist.
In a different phrasing, we can say that aside from the Christ-like symbolism associated with Gi-hun, there’s also an image in the trailer suggesting further religious parallels. Specifically, there’s a shot of him positioned against a bright background, with what appears to be a cross-shaped object – a knife with its blade upward and handles on either side – silhouetted behind him. If Gi-hun is symbolically depicted as Christ, then the character portraying his antagonist could be seen as Judas, figuratively betraying him, aligning with the recurring imagery of knives.
The scene shows Kang Dae-ho (Kang Ha-neul) casting furtive glances at the coffin as it enters the room. His survival during the rebellion was due to a cowardly act – returning to the main room for ammunition and remaining there, and he likely grapples with survivor’s guilt now. If Gi-hun symbolizes Christ, Dae-ho might be likened to Doubting Thomas, who hesitated to believe in the resurrection until he could verify Jesus’ wounds. As Season 3 unfolds, Dae-ho may harbor doubts about his standing with Gi-hun and whether he will find acceptance within any future alliances due to his inaction.
Gi-hun cannot participate in the vote
In a glance at the trailer for “Squid Game” Season 3, it’s evident that the contestants remain split into two groups (Xs and Os), with the Os significantly outnumbering the Xs. A detail worth remembering from Season 2 is that during intermissions between each match, the players are given the opportunity to vote on whether to continue the games or terminate them, allowing them to take home the money amassed thus far as their reward.
At the close of Season 2, the X team briefly held a slim upper hand. Yet, given that only the X group took part in the uprising and numerous ones among them perished, it now appears that the Os possess the upper hand. It’s clear that all these players will vote to prolong the games, making it challenging for the Xs to intervene.
It seems that Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) won’t have a say in the voting process at all, making the situation even more dire. A frame from the trailer depicts him handcuffed to a dorm room bed, as other players line up behind, seemingly waiting for their chance to vote. This predicament must be unbearable for Gi-hun, knowing he can’t influence the vote’s outcome. Throughout most of the game, his objective has been to keep as many people alive as possible, so this turn of events might shatter him completely.
The ball machines will be completely random
In one scene from the trailer, it looks like players interact with an enormous gumball machine, turning a knob to get either a red or blue ball. At a later point, the players can be seen donning vests in colors that correspond to the balls they selected earlier.
Originating in Japan, these machines, often compared to gumball machines by Western audiences, are commonly known as gashapon machines. Instead of dispensing candy, these machines contain small toys or figurines inside the balls. People may spend considerable time and resources trying to collect a specific rare toy, leading to some debate regarding their classification as a form of gambling. Interestingly, our protagonist, who has grappled with gambling issues, now finds his destiny intertwined with one of these gashapon machines.
Contemplating the idea that gashapon machines are integral to the games is unsettling, given they produce results at random. It seems more plausible these machines function to randomly distribute characters between two teams (red and blue), akin to how participants picked numbers before stepping on glass stones. Generally, players have some degree of choice, be it selecting teammates or deciding X or O. However, this time, it appears the game designers are stripping the players of their decision-making power.
The mother and son will be playing on opposite teams
As a fan, I must admit that the gachapon machines in this series have an unsettling charm. But what makes them even more haunting is the glimpse we get from the trailer about how the teams are going to be arranged – and it’s far from pleasant. For instance, Yong-sik (played by Yang Dong-geun) and his mother, Geum-ja (Kang Ae-shim), will likely find themselves on opposite sides. The trailer reveals a moment of despair on their faces when they both hold different-colored balls, hinting at the heartbreaking possibility that only one of them might make it out alive. This twist is particularly gut-wrenching because it could mean a life or death struggle between the two characters we care about most.
By observing the balls the characters select and the colors of their vests, you can make an educated guess about which team each character is on. It seems that Geum-ja, Dae-ho (Kang Ha-neul), Min-su (Lee Da-wit), and Gi-hun are likely part of the Red Team. The Blue Team might consist of Yong-sik, Hyun-ju (Park Sung-hoon), Seon-nyeo (Chae Gook-hee), and her followers.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but speculate that this upcoming game might mirror the marbles game from Season 1, where it sets up an exciting face-off among friends and reduces the number of participants by half. If I were to place a wager on the winning team, it would be the Red Team without a doubt! After all, our beloved protagonist is part of this group, along with several other significant characters. I’m hoping that they won’t eliminate Gi-hun just yet (although if this takes place in the finale episode, then anything can happen!).
One game will likely trap the players in a maze
One anticipation among fans for “Squid Game” Season 3 is an expansion on the variety of games, and the recently released trailer suggests as much by showing Gi-hun in a red jacket navigating what seems to be a labyrinth. The intricate maze game could potentially be a progression from the game involving colored balls, as the contestants are seen wearing these color-coded vests in the room with the gashapon machine and subsequently within the maze.
After being handed their vests, the players receive enigmatic red and blue containers, which could be used during the game. It’s uncertain what’s inside these boxes, but some spectators have proposed a theory suggesting that the masked guards might be providing each player with either a key or a knife. This speculation arises from noticing that the room containing the gashapon machine has two doorways – one resembling a keyhole and one shaped like a dagger. While these symbols could signify various things, they may possibly hint at the objective of each team. It’s plausible that one team’s goal is to safeguard the keys, while the other team’s mission might be to use the knives to seize the keys from them.
A brief snippet from the trailer seems to depict a player marking what looks like an arrow on the wall with blood. If this scene is part of the maze sequence, it could suggest a desperate character trying to communicate a message to their fellow players before meeting their end. We’ll find out the truth when “Squid Game” Season 3 debuts on June 27, streaming exclusively on Netflix.
