If you haven’t finished watching the latest season of “Squid Game,” avoid any speculation or discussion about it as it might contain major spoilers. Proceed with caution!
In Season 2 of “Squid Game,” viewers were shocked to learn that Player 222, a young woman named Kim Jun-hee (played by Jo Yu-ri), was expecting. It’s no surprise that the series ratchets up the tension in its third and climactic season; not only does Jun-hee deliver her baby under incredibly perilous conditions, but the newborn’s life is in immediate danger.
In the second episode of Season 3 of the globally acclaimed series “Squid Game,” created by Hwang Dong-hyuk, the game being played is a twisted version of hide and seek. The contestants are divided into two teams: blue and red, each wearing corresponding vests. The blue team’s objective is to evade the red team undetected until they locate an exit using keys provided. The red team, however, must kill members of the blue team. If they fail to do so, they are eliminated from the game. With the help of former soldier Cho Hyun-ju (Park Sung-hoon) and the tough Jang Geum-ja (Kang Ae-shim), Player 120, Jun-hee navigates the game, even though she endures a painful ankle injury. However, things become more challenging when she goes into labor, creating a new and alarming dilemma.
In the tale I’m fond of, Hyun-ju selflessly safeguarded a room as Geum-ja assisted Jun-hee in delivering her child miraculously under challenging circumstances; heartbreakingly, Hyun-ju was later slain by none other than Lee Myung-gi, the baby’s own father, who, unbeknownst to him, owed his debt of gratitude to Hyun-jee for protecting both Jun-hee and their newborn child. Now, I can’t help but wonder what became of Jun-hee’s baby afterwards, and why its fate turned out to be so dismal?
Jun-hee’s baby survives one of the terrifying games played in Squid Game … but what about Jun-hee herself?
With her newborn baby close and an injured ankle to tend, Jun-hee must ready herself for another harrowing competition alongside the other players. This round is a seemingly innocent game of jump rope, but there’s a sinister twist: competitors must traverse a narrow pathway while a giant metal rope is swung above them by two massive dolls. If a player slips off the path or misses the metal rope, they will fall to their doom below the playing field.
Jun-hee just stays put, looking disheartened and uninterested in attempting to navigate the walkway. The lead character of the series, Seong Gi-hun (played by Lee Jung-jae), who is a parent himself, delivers an inspiring speech about the beauty of watching your child mature before starting jump rope. He then offers to carry Jun-hee’s baby across the bridge to safety and return for her later. As he does so, Gi-hun wraps the baby in Jun-hee’s player jacket, which has the number 222 on it – a detail you should remember. Gi-hun manages to cross the bridge safely, but he is prevented from returning due to other players pushing each other ruthlessly on the pathway, aiming to reduce the pool of potential winners.
Despite Myung-gi’s heartfelt pleas to aid her and their child, she stubbornly rejects him. Tragically, Jun-hee leaps from the bridge, understanding that she won’t be able to cross it safely. Meanwhile, Gi-hun continues to care for their baby, who wears the Player 222 jacket again. It is at this moment that everything takes a shockingly grim turn.
Gi-hun, now the caretaker of Jun-hee’s baby, is faced with a seemingly impossible choice
In the upcoming Season 3 of “Squid Game,” those notorious high-rolling guests from Season 1 return, lounging in their lavish box overlooking the playing field while wagering on hapless contestants and swilling liquor, all adorned with ornate animal masks. However, following Jun-hee’s demise, they concoct a truly malicious plan. To safeguard their bet, they declare that the infant is now Player 222. By the time the players regroup after the jump rope challenge, the guards have been briefed on the development, and they inform the other players that a newborn baby has become an active participant in this deadly game.
In a heart-wrenchingly gruesome manner, it’s hard to fathom the depiction of a baby being harmed amidst the violent chaos seen in “Squid Game.” Yet, there’s a glimmer of hope in the form of Gi-hun, a man who miraculously survived his initial encounter with the game (though he eventually finds himself back in the fray). The climactic game, resembling a hopscotch-like pattern called “the squid game,” requires players to navigate circles, squares, and triangles while eliminating each other by selecting opponents and knocking them off towering platforms. Despite the bloodthirsty intentions of many players towards the baby, both Myung-gi and Gi-hun take on the role of her guardians. This shocking turn of events is a testament to the dark imagination that lies at the heart of “Squid Game.
“Squid Game” is streaming on Netflix now.
