You thought Squid Game, one of the most bingeable shows on Netflix, was over? Well, think again.
In a broader perspective, the series as we had come to expect has concluded its run. Originating from South Korea, the three-season saga officially wrapped up and found a spot within the 2025 TV lineup. We witnessed the journey of various characters, the growth in LGBTQ+ representation throughout the show, and how Gi-hun battled against the Recruiter in Season 2, only to disintegrate in Season 3 – it was nothing short of epic.
The final episode was filled with sadness from multiple angles, but it may not mark the absolute end for the series ‘_Squid Game_’. Intriguingly, whispers have been swirling that a U.S. adaptation of the show is being planned. Despite no official word on the matter, there’s been much buzz and talk about it. So let’s delve into the rumors that have surfaced thus far.
Squid Game Ended With A Tease Of An American-Based Game
It seems quite likely that an American version of “Squid Game” may occur, given how the third season concludes.
Many viewers found aspects of the third season disappointing, ranging from the tragic deaths of characters to the resolution of Gi-hun’s storyline. However, a pivotal scene that sparked widespread conversation was when Cate Blanchett unexpectedly appeared as an American recruiter during In-ho’s (The Front Man) trip to New York City to deliver Gi-hun’s belongings and money to his daughter.
This incident stirred up lots of conversations among fans, as some guessed it might hint at a possible adaptation of the games in America. Yet, it doesn’t automatically mean that will happen.
In a chat I had with Variety back in June 2025, Hwang Dong-hyuk, the mastermind behind the show, clarified that the conclusion we saw doesn’t tie into any speculated American spin-off. Despite the games being set in America, they remain distinct from any potential future series there.
To clarify, the ending of Season 3 is what I had in mind, and nothing more. It’s not connected to any news about David Fincher working on Squid Game, as I haven’t received official confirmation regarding that. There have been rumors circulating, but I was simply imagining an impactful conclusion for our show.
Previously, the creator has expressed no desire to create spin-offs. Given this, it seems unlikely that he would include hints for an American adaptation that isn’t his own, especially when this ending was his preferred one for the series.
It’s quite surprising to imagine that Cate Blanchett might have already joined the ranks as an official recruiter for a U.S. based game. While I greatly appreciate her acting talents in many of her films, this particular role within this franchise just doesn’t seem like a perfect fit for me.
Regardless of whether the conclusion didn’t quite match our expectations, there are still various aspects that can be highlighted.

In October 2024, It Was Announced That A David Fincher Spinoff Was In Development
One key detail we know regarding the “Squid Game” series, which originates from America, is that it was reported by Deadline in October 2024 as being in production, with acclaimed filmmaker David Fincher set to take charge as the director.
Initially, the thought of an American remake of a highly acclaimed and widely loved South Korean drama series might cause some reservation among viewers. However, with Fincher at the helm, my usual apprehension towards such adaptations is somewhat diminished.
Over the past couple of decades, I’ve had the privilege of being part of a team that has brought some of the most influential movies to Hollywood, under the guidance of the talented director David Fincher. Among his masterpieces, I’ve been particularly captivated by films such as Fight Club, Seven, Gone Girl, Zodiac, The Social Network, and countless others.
The movie director has continuously collaborated with Netflix, contributing to various projects for them. Among these, one of my top picks is “Mindhunter,” though it didn’t receive a Season 3 and was somewhat overlooked, this is where he served as both producer and director. Additionally, he took on the role of executive producer and director in “House of Cards.” Moreover, he co-created the exceptional adult animated series, “Love, Death, and Robots,” which stands out among Netflix’s offerings.
If Fincher were to create an American Squid Game, it might work well.
Despite speculation, no new information about the upcoming series has been shared so far. As reported by What’s On Netflix, there are whispers that filming might start in December 2025, but this is yet to be confirmed, as we stand in mid-July.

The Creator Has Said He Would Watch And Support It
Although Hwang Dong-hyuk has expressed no desire to develop spinoffs, he remains open to David Fincher directing a series. In fact, he wholeheartedly endorses this idea.
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in June 2025, the creator expressed that should the series materialize, he would eagerly tune in and press play as soon as it became available on the streaming platform.
I’ve long admired David Fincher’s cinematic creations, such as Se7en, and have enjoyed his movies immensely. If he were to produce an American adaptation of Squid Game, I believe that would make for intriguing viewing. Without a doubt, I’d be quick to watch it as soon as it becomes available, should the project materialize.
To put it simply, this situation carries significant weight. Time and again, the original authors have vehemently opposed adaptations due to concerns about their work losing its essence. However, the creator’s openness to this process is a clear sign of approval, making it a significant positive indicator.

Actors Even Have Comments On How It Could Connect
Actors associated with the show “Squid Game” have expressed thoughts about how a spin-off series might link back to the original storyline.
Although Gi-hun’s (Lee Jung-jae) narrative has concluded, the character of In-ho (played by Lee Byung-hun, also known as the Front Man) remains active within the storyline. During an interview with Radio Times in July 2025, the actor expressed that exploring In-ho’s tale would be a logical choice due to fan demand and because there’s still plenty of narrative left to unfold involving him.
The pivotal aspect of the spinoff lies in its narrative, preferably more captivating than Squid Game’s. I eagerly anticipate it delving into In-ho’s past since viewers remain eager for additional insights… Upon careful observation, In-ho appears both taken aback and disgruntled [regarding the American recruiter]. When I inquired about this scene from director Hwang prior to filming, he did verify that In-ho was indeed unaware that the game would be moved to a different location.
Indeed, such a link would be quite intriguing – a connection that aligns beautifully with my expectations. I’m eagerly waiting for just that kind of occurrence.
Although we have to wait a while for updates on the potential new series, I can hardly contain my excitement and will likely be eagerly anticipating any fresh news. In the meantime, I might as well rewatch “Squid Game” and relive that intense experience once more.
