Stalker 2 dev on narrative themes of displacement amid a backdrop of war

As a passionate fan who has been eagerly awaiting Stalker 2 for years, I must say that my anticipation has reached new heights after hearing Slava Lukyanenka’s insights into the game’s development and narrative. His personal experiences and the studio’s collective journey reflect poignantly in the story they are crafting.

This year, Stalker 2 is highly expected among gamers, and after a recent postponement, it seems set for a launch on November 20th.

The progress of the project has been impacted due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, leading developer GSC Game World to relocate their operations to Prague and complete the work. I recently had a conversation with Slava Lukyanenka, the game’s Lead Producer, discussing how the studio’s circumstances are reflected within The Zone.

“The Voice of Monolith has gone”

“When I joined the company, the last time I played Stalker was 10 years back,” Lukyanenka explains.

Initially, my grasp of the zone’s nature was merely average, but as I conversed with our story director, I began to gradually comprehend their approach to portrayal. They shared insights into the emotions that our developers might experience within the narrative, employing subtle metaphors to convey the feelings one may have when devoid of a home, encompassing desperation and loneliness.

“He admits that our tale isn’t your typical journey of someone venturing into ‘the zone’. Instead, you’ll notice a great deal of introspection from our team members as they reflect on their experiences.”

“Although there’s no actual war in the game’s setting, you might still experience similar emotions through the expressions and actions of the other characters.”

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but draw parallels, as Lukyanenka does, between one of our beloved series characters, Strider, and his fascinating journey – from serving the enigmatic Monolith organization to his eventual separation.

“In the trailer we shared last year, Strider mentioned a line that went, ‘The voice of the Monolith of Monolith vanished suddenly.’ This made him realize the consequences of his past actions.”

“As the invasion began, many Ukrainians experienced something similar. Once Russian propaganda faded, it became clear what was truly occurring as the Russian military entered a town – the silence of Monolith, followed by the dawning realization among the people.”

“Throughout this narrative, I find these small symbolic elements and brief introspections evoking a range of feelings within me.”
