Stan Lee’s Shocking Final Days Revealed in New Documentary

As a passionate cinephile, I can confidently say that since the 1960s, not many artists and writers have had as profound an impact on popular culture as the legendary Stan Lee. He tapped into the deepest fears and aspirations of young adults, swiftly expanding his influence worldwide. In the aftermath of the comic book industry’s decline in the ’50s, he played a pivotal role in reshaping the superhero genre. The man who brought us The X-Men, Spider-Man, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, and The Fantastic Four, his legacy transcended the pages of comic books. His work grew into a billion-dollar film empire under Disney, known as the Marvel Cinematic Universe – a testament to the modern action blockbuster.

After his death in 2018, it was discovered that Lee’s personal life wasn’t as glamorous as many had believed. A new documentary alleges that he was the victim of an orchestrated attempt to defraud and manipulate him out of his fortune. This has led to a series of lawsuits in the California legal system, but so far, no resolution has been reached. This marks the beginning of what is being called Phase Two of the Stan Lee scandal. If these allegations are true, it’s not the happy ending that Lee deserved. It appears that while he put on a brave face for his adoring public, Lee was living a secret nightmare. Here’s what we know and can expect to see in the documentary.

Stan Lee’s Sad Final Years

In his ninth decade on the convention circuit and still a beloved figure among fans despite his fragile state, Lee was frequently wheeled into arenas filled with enthusiastic spectators, en route from filming locations where he gave cameos in TV and movies. By his side during his twilight years was assistant Jon Bolerjack, who witnessed many intimate moments in the final five years of the late Marvel legend’s life, which were typically spent traveling between one photo opportunity to another. Bolerjack captured these moments on film for future reference. I’ll share more about that shortly.

Following his death, there was intense competition to manage his substantial estate, further complicated by allegations that he had been deceived or manipulated in his decisions, not an unusual situation for Lee, who often felt betrayed by his trusted confidants as claimed in reports from Deadline. At the time of his passing and mourning the loss of his wife of 70 years, Lee initiated a lawsuit against his manager and lawyer, whom he described as “dishonest businessmen, sycophants, and opportunists.” Lee passed away a year later, but the scandal surrounding him was far from resolved; instead, it appeared to be escalating further.

Stan Lee’s Elder Abuse Allegations Are Still Unresolved

The situation surrounding Lee became intensely complex, as Lee’s relatives, legal representatives, and management found themselves at odds, both inside and outside of court. The protracted civil lawsuit filed by Lee’s estate against his manager, Jerardo Olivarez, continued. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Olivarez managed to seize control of the power of attorney from Lee’s only child, J.C., under a deal that granted him authority over the ailing writer, then in his nineties. With this arrangement, Olivarez had jurisdiction not only over Lee’s schedule but also his financial affairs. The lawsuit accused Olivarez of misappropriating more than $4 million from the Lee Family Trust.

It’s worth mentioning that another of Lee’s previous business managers, Keya Morgan, was also involved in a theft case which eventually concluded without definitive answers. The case was dropped in 2022, with Morgan alleging Lee’s daughter as the perpetrator. In essence, this legal drama ended up being a complex tangle, leaving everyone uncertain about who was responsible or if any wrongdoing had truly occurred. During the trial, it was reported by Variety that the jury chuckled during the closing argument. This may suggest they didn’t side with Lee’s daughter after listening to recordings of her disputes with her elderly father over credit cards.

Eventually, the Lee-Olivarez trial ended without resolution, shedding no light on any questions. Despite the intricate personal journeys and epic narratives that Stan Lee created in numerous comics and movies, his own (troubled) life story unfolded as a disappointing, distasteful legal spectacle offering no sense of closure.

Untold Revelations From the Fly on the Wall

Bolerjack plans to delve into that story, disregarding any potential upsetting of others. The filmmaker openly acknowledged his debt to Lee, whom he considered both a role model and mentor. As he shared with The Hollywood Reporter, this movie was something he felt compelled to create, currently fundraising on Kickstarter and releasing a teaser for his confidential project. In the trailer, he declares that he has supporting evidence from witnesses and ample video footage, which backs up the accusations he’s making about verbal abuse and mistreatment by Lee’s caretakers. Always attentive to Lee’s needs, Bolerjack discreetly watched the inner circle and their dealings as an outsider, potentially offering the most insightful view yet into Lee’s life, particularly those tumultuous final four years.

Titled tentatively as Stan Lee: The Last Act, Bolerjack acknowledges he’s making potentially contentious claims, delving into episodes that might discomfort both Stan Lee’s family and those implicated in this investigative piece. Bolerjack seems to be taking on this task despite potential legal consequences, emphasizing that Lee would have wanted the truth to surface.

The publication of this controversial semi-biography about Stan Lee is uncertain at the moment. Although we appreciate Bolerjack’s efforts to defend Lee, it seems justice has already passed by. It’s unclear who Bolerjack is pointing fingers at for mistreating Lee, but those individuals may have escaped legal repercussions. As of now, no release date has been announced for Stan Lee: The Final Chapter. We will notify you as soon as we have updates on this matter.
