As a seasoned gamer with a soft spot for movies, attending the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures annual gala felt like stepping into a virtual reality game where all my favorite characters have come to life! The star-studded event was an unparalleled experience that brought together Hollywood icons and emerging artists alike.

On Saturday evening, the Academy Museum of Cinematic Arts hosted its yearly gala, celebrating Paul Mescal, Rita Moreno, and Quentin Tarantino. This event brought in more than $11 million to fund exhibitions, educational programs, and public events at the Los Angeles museum that debuted in 2021.

Every year, one of Hollywood’s most glamorous events, now in its fourth year, was jointly organized by Dr. Eric Esrailian, Salma Hayek Pinault, Nicole Kidman, Eva Longoria, and Tyler Perry. The evening saw a diverse array of attendees, ranging from established movie legends such as Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg, Meg Ryan, Joaquin Phoenix, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, to up-and-coming stars like Mikey Madison from Anora, Drew Starkey from Queer, Harris Dickinson from Babygirl, recent Emmy winner Anna Sawai, and Cooper Koch and Nicholas Alexander Chavez who starred in Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.

Additionally, several notable figures who might secure a nomination for this year’s Oscars made appearances as well. For instance, the stars of Wicked, Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo (alongside Jeff Goldblum and director Jon M. Chu), graced the event. Also present were the cast members of Emilia Pérez, such as Selena Gomez, Zoe Saldaña, Karla Sofía Gascón, and Édgar Ramírez. Denis Villeneuve, who is directing Dune 2, was there too. The actor Sebastian Stan from The Apprentice, Colman Domingo from Sing Sing, Demi Moore from The Substance, and Margaret Qualley were also in attendance.

At the grand event, Mescal was honored with the Vantage Award, a recognition given to an up-and-coming artist who both reflects and questions the established stories in cinema; on Saturday, this prestigious award was handed over by his “Foe” co-star, Saoirse Ronan.

The actor from “Gladiator II” shared with The Hollywood Reporter on the red carpet that receiving this recognition is a massive honor, something he wasn’t anticipating initially due to not fully understanding its context. It was about someone at the beginning of their career trying to define what it means for them. Once he understood, he felt incredibly proud to have the opportunity to express what this job and this industry signify to him.

Steven Spielberg handed over the Icon Award, a tribute for artists who’ve left a substantial global cultural footprint, to Moreno. This further embellished Moreno’s collection of awards that make them an EGOT winner (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony winner). To wrap up the ceremony, John Travolta presented Tarantino with the Luminary Award, a recognition given to artists whose work expands the creative boundaries within cinema.

In his acceptance speech, Tarantino shared that he would be giving the original manuscript of the screenplay for “Pulp Fiction” to a museum as a donation.

Wrapping up an unforgettable night as a gamer, I got to witness Erivo take center stage, treating us to covers of “I’m Here” from The Color Purple, “Home” by Diana Ross from The Wiz, and “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” from The Wizard of Oz. To top it off, she performed an amazing rendition of Prince’s “Purple Rain”. This spectacular event was made possible through a collaboration between Rolex, the primary sponsor and official timekeeping partner of the Academy Museum.
