The groundbreaking series, Star Trek: Discovery, wrapped up a year ago without revealing the intricate details of its most fascinating unsolved mystery. In the final season of Star Trek: Discovery, Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) unraveled the enigmatic technology of the Progenitors, which holds life-sustaining powers. The series also marked the wedding of Ambassador Saru (Doug Jones), and fast-forwarded through decades to align Discovery with the happenings depicted in the “Calypso” episode of Star Trek: Short Treks.
In a new start for Star Trek: Discovery, season 3 leaped into the 32nd century, exploring the most distant point in Star Trek‘s timeframe. A gap of one year occurred between the first and second episode of Star Trek: Discovery season 3, where Commander Michael Burnham outpaced the USS Discovery, traveling to the year 3188 and encountering her future spouse, Cleveland Booker (David Ajala). After this time jump, the USS Discovery caught up, bringing Burnham back together with the crew – yet, details about the ‘missing year’ Michael spent with Book remain a mystery.
Star Trek: Discovery Won’t Reveal The Untold Story Of Burnham & Book’s Lost Year
Michael & Booker Grew Closer Traveling The Galaxy Together
With “Star Trek: Discovery” now concluded, the intriguing tale of Michael Burnham and Cleveland Booker’s ‘misadventured’ year spent together is unlikely to be portrayed on-screen. Their bond deepened into romance during their travels across the galaxy as couriers, with glimpses of their escapades subtly woven into seasons 3 through 5 of “Star Trek: Discovery”. Unfortunately for viewers, they won’t have the opportunity to witness the specifics of Burnham and Book’s voyages alongside Cleveland’s feline companion, Grudge.
As a passionate movie critic for ScreenRant, I got the chance to chat with David Ajala about the upcoming season 5 of Star Trek: Discovery. Intriguingly, Ajala shared his enthusiasm about delving deeper into the mystery surrounding Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Book’s (David Ajala himself) lost year together. Here’s what he had to share about this intriguing storyline:
“I can’t wait for audiences to see more of the bond between Michael and me, especially during that missing year we spent together. It’s a journey filled with challenges, growth, and discoveries that will surely resonate with viewers.” – David Ajala
I believe it would make a fantastic tale! That particular year, I refer to it as “The Adventures of Burnham and Book with Grudge the Queen” because it seemed like such a period of growth for Michael Burnham and Cleveland Booker. I think that experience within that year shaped them into the individuals we encounter in Season Three.
2021 novel by Una McCormack titled “Star Trek: Discovery: Wonderlands” explores the events of Michael Burnham and Cleveland Booker’s year prior to the USS Discovery’s arrival in the 32nd century. While Star Trek novels usually don’t hold official status unless they are directly referenced on-screen in a Star Trek film or series, “Wonderlands” can be seen as Burnham and Booker’s story from their lost year. However, if a future version of Star Trek: Discovery, either as a TV show or movie, establishes its own canon, it could potentially override the events of “Wonderlands“.
Star Trek: Discovery Gave Burnham & Book A Perfect Ending
Michael Got An Ending Unlike Any Other Star Trek Captain
If Star Trek: Discovery comes back for another season, it seems unlikely that they would revisit the missing year story of Michael Burnham and Cleveland Booker which occurred in 3188. This is because at the end of Season 5, Book and Burnham were reunited as a couple and embarked on a new journey together. The emotional conclusion to Star Trek: Discovery showed that many years later, Admiral Michael Burnham and Book were happily married with their son, Leto (Sawandi Wilson), becoming a Starfleet Captain himself. After this, the USS Discovery set off on its final mission as seen in “Calypso” from Star Trek: Short Treks.
Will Star Trek: Discovery come back for more episodes? Regardless, Michael Burnham experienced an unparalleled joyful conclusion compared to other Star Trek captains. Through her self-doubt, challenges, and rise as a hero saving the galaxy, Burnham found a home and family that evaded Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner), Captain Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula), and Admiral Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew). In essence, the ending of Star Trek: Discovery marked the end of Michael Burnham’s story, although there are still many untold adventures for her and the USS Discovery ahead.
The intriguing time period featuring a fractured United Federation of Planets in the 32nd-century galaxy, as portrayed in ‘Star Trek: Discovery’, could have benefited from more exploration – this is what makes Michael and Book’s mysterious missing year together so captivating. A deeper understanding of the tranquility and personal development Michael Burnham achieved at the end of ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ would be enriched if we eventually witness her fresh start in the 32nd century during her lost year with Book.
