Star Trek EMH Return Details LEAKED! Voyager Fans Will FREAK!

Fewer new “Star Trek” shows are scheduled compared to a few years back, yet I remain eager for what lies ahead. The newest trailer for “Strange New Worlds” was delightful, and Robert Picardo’s recent remarks about The EMH’s live-action comeback spark hope for more episodes reminiscent of “Voyager”‘s top uses of his character.

I firmly believe that The EMH/Doctor is among the greatest characters in the “Star Trek” universe, so when it was announced that he would reappear in “Starfleet Academy,” I wasn’t entirely shocked. However, after witnessing his discussion with Kate Mulgrew during “Trek Talks 4” and hearing about what fans can anticipate, I was delighted to discover the extent of the planning going into this new storyline. In his own words:

The Doctor remains much like we remember, yet there’s a new layer of complexity. He’s still got his wit, but it’s now tinged with an added dimension from the profound feeling of immortality. It’s something we can all appreciate as both a gift and a challenge.

1. How does an 800-year lifespan affect a hologram’s existence? How is its memory of the past maintained? Is its knowledge of past events complete or incomplete and possibly distorted? What are the effects of such a long life on a sentient being? These thoughts are racing through my mind, and I can hardly wait for Starfleet Academy to provide some answers.

2. In what ways does living for more than eight centuries impact a hologram’s existence? How is its memory of past events preserved? Is its knowledge of the past complete or fragmented and potentially corrupted? What happens to a sentient being after living for that length of time? These questions swirl around in my head, and I can hardly wait for Starfleet Academy to offer some insight.

3. How does an extended lifespan of 800+ years influence a hologram’s existence? How is its memory of the past retained? Is its knowledge of past events comprehensive or incomplete and possibly distorted? What are the consequences of such a long life on a sentient being? These thoughts buzz through my mind, and I eagerly anticipate the answers that Starfleet Academy will provide.

4. How does a lifespan exceeding 800 years affect a hologram’s existence? How is its memory of past events preserved? Is its knowledge of the past complete or fragmented and potentially corrupted? What impact does such a long life have on a sentient being? These questions whirl around in my thoughts, and I can hardly wait for Starfleet Academy to shed some light.

5. How does living for over 800 years affect a hologram’s existence? How is its memory of the past kept intact? Is its knowledge of the past thorough or incomplete and possibly distorted? What happens to a sentient being after living that long? These thoughts spin through my head, and I can hardly wait for Starfleet Academy to offer some enlightenment.

Indeed, it seems plausible that the series primarily focuses on novice cadets embarking on their journey at Starfleet Academy, featuring a youthful ensemble led by actors who have previously starred in Star Trek, including Holly Hunter and Paul Giamatti. Unlike Voyager with its numerous episodes centered around the Doctor, his role as an instructor and the absence of filler episodes in contemporary Trek may limit our exposure to many solo episodes involving him.

Concurrently, it’s not uncommon for avid fans of “Star Trek: Voyager,” including myself, to argue that The Doctor deserved a more prominent role compared to many others due to the sheer delight he brought. This could potentially lead to Robert Picardo having substantial screen time on “Starfleet Academy.” Notably, if his scenes are as engaging as they were when he reprised his character for “Prodigy” Season 2, this would undoubtedly be the case.

Regardless of the situation, I always appreciate learning about Robert Picardo’s thought process behind The Doctor/EMH, and I can’t wait to witness how he applies that when this series ultimately debuts. Fingers crossed, we’ll get a definitive release date before summer arrives, although I suspect it won’t be until 2026 before we get to watch these characters in the 32nd century.

Looking forward, it’s confirmed that “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” Season 3 will stream on Paramount+ this summer. Given the scarcity of sci-fi journeys thus far this year, I’m eagerly anticipating not only this series but also “Starfleet Academy.” To keep myself entertained until then, I’ll be catching up on other sci-fi shows in the genre.
