As a lifelong Trekkie with more Starfleet uniforms than I care to admit, I’ve seen my fair share of strange occurrences in the galaxy and beyond. But nothing quite compares to the bizarre situation that poor Beda Koorey finds herself in, all because of an innocent joke about her car being the USS Enterprise.
Typically, I find that Star Trek enthusiasts stand out from other fan communities I’ve encountered, and I’m more than willing to defend them. As the 2025 TV lineup approaches with new Star Trek series on the horizon, I’ll need to stay vigilant about some mischief-makers targeting an elderly resident in New York. Unfortunately, an elderly woman has been hit with tens of thousands of dollars in fines over a novelty license plate.
When Beda Koorey received a license plate reading NCC-1701, she probably thought it was just a humorous play on her car resembling the Starfleet vessel Enterprise. However, the hardships she’s faced due to this choice have become an unexpected burden, causing her tears of exasperation. Koorey shared with CBS News that she receives tickets and fines from various parts of the country, allegedly from Trekkies swapping their license plates for novelty ones. This ranges from parking violations and speeding tickets to more serious infractions such as school zone offenses and even criminal charges.
A police chief from Ohio contacted me regarding license plates, as they were connected to a recent robbery incident.
It appears that Trekkies are accustomed to envisioning a world without scarcity, but this doesn’t give them the right to pilfer money. It seems these plates are being purchased on Amazon, and regrettably, the fees have been directed towards Koorey even though she relinquished her plates four years ago. If her enjoyment of Trek with a Paramount+ subscription has been soured by this situation, I can certainly understand why.

The traffic tickets and crimes are bad enough, but it also needs to be said that replacing your license plate with fraudulent ones is also highly illegal. It’s certainly not the type of behavior fitting of a member of Starfleet, though I guess it’s not a given people doing this are Star Trek fans. It might just be a popular tag that the criminal world has caught on they can take advantage of.
Unfortunately, it falls on Beda Koorey to bear the brunt of this situation. Despite not being out any money, she finds herself frequently writing and sending letters to various government offices across multiple states. I’d rather face off against the fiercest villains from Star Trek: The Next Generation than engage in a back-and-forth with bureaucratic agencies.
If you’re a fan of Star Trek, there might be a message here that goes beyond the simple notion that crime is wrong. Instead of sporting an Enterprise license plate, consider referencing other iconic episodes or beloved characters instead. I personally would much rather see a Spock plate or one featuring another memorable character from Star Trek.
2025 looks promising as we anticipate more Star Trek content, which should help fans divert their attention from auto-related offenses and instead enjoy the new season of Strange New Worlds and the release of the Section 31 film. I’m all set for these upcoming adventures!
