As a lifelong Star Trek enthusiast who grew up in the Emerald Isle, I wholeheartedly support the idea of erecting a statue of Miles O’Brien in his hometown of Killarney. Having spent countless hours binge-watching Deep Space Nine on my trusty Rigelian replicator, I can attest to the fact that Colm Meaney’s portrayal of this character is nothing short of iconic.
For decades, the beloved series Star Trek has introduced fans to an array of captivating characters. These characters are so iconic that dedicated followers have gone as far as creating enduring real-life homages to the space explorers and the principles they embody as Starfleet members. Given this, it’s no surprise that someone eventually came up with a tribute idea for a cast member of Deep Space Nine, who is famously referred to as the “Most vital person in Starfleet.
Absolutely, initiatives are underway to honor Colm Meaney’s iconic character, Miles O’Brien, with a dedicated statue, and I wholeheartedly support this idea. For those unaware, the aim is to install a statue of Miles O’Brien in his hometown, Killarney, Ireland, where the character was originally from.
Currently, I’m engrossed in watching Star Trek: Deep Space Nine through my Paramount+ membership, and I must admit that the notion of expanding upon this series has caught my interest. Here are some more thoughts on why this could be fantastic.
A Miles O’Brien Statue Is A Dual Homage To Colm Meaney, And Star Trek: Lower Decks
It’s worth mentioning that although a Miles O’Brien statue is an excellent concept, it’s not entirely original as a tribute. In the first season of “Star Trek: Lower Decks,” there was already a statue of O’Brien in the episode titled “Temporal Edict.” The series creator, Mike McMahan, revealed to StarTrek.com that this statue honored O’Brien as the “Most important person in Starfleet” because he embodied the ideal “Lower Decker.” This means O’Brien was a crew member who climbed the Starfleet ranks all the way to a prominent teaching position at Starfleet Academy, while also raising a family.
He’s the essence of what makes an excellent Starfleet Officer, and truthfully, he’s also a fantastic individual. As we gear up for the last season of Lower Decks, which is set to end in 2024, why not erect a statue to commemorate the series that spotlighted the everyday hero of Starfleet who consistently gives their best? We’re expecting a strong ending to the series, but this statue would be the perfect finishing touch to honor it.
I Absolutely Love The Janeway Statue In Indiana
As a devotee of “Star Trek” and a resident of Indiana, I can’t help but feel an immense sense of pride knowing that a real-life statue honors Captain Kathryn Janeway in her hometown, Bloomington. Each time I come across someone else posting about visiting the tribute online, my heart swells with pride. It seems almost absurd, given my past musings, to express such feelings, considering the debate over why Philadelphia has a Rocky statue when there are other, more deserving boxing legends to celebrate.
Through Janeway, I’ve come to understand that it’s all about the essence and symbolism she embodies. Interestingly, even though there were worries from residents that actress Kate Mulgrew might cause a temporal distortion by visiting, she went ahead anyway. Now, I can’t help but wonder if Colm Meaney would visit Miles O’Brien’s statue, and perhaps express his thoughts on the character. Frankly, I find this idea quite appealing, given how passionately he’s been defending Trekkies lately, assuring everyone that they aren’t as eccentric as some might think.
Irish Star Trek Fans Deserve A Cool Way To Celebrate The Franchise
Currently, “Star Trek,” an American intellectual property, primarily shoots its productions in Canada. However, this franchise is globally renowned and cherished. Although the series strives to reflect various cultures and humanist ideals, it’s understandable that international fans might miss out on the excitement of meeting the cast at conventions or attending events hosted by Paramount+.
Fans from Ireland are looking for a positive portrayal to identify with, and honestly, the franchise could use some amends in this regard. The questionable depiction of Ireland through Fair Haven city in Star Trek: Voyager has been a topic of discussion. I believe we need more characters like Miles O’Brien who represent the Irish in Star Trek. It would also be fantastic if a new series spin-off from Deep Space Nine, hinted at by Alex Kurtzman, includes more Irish representation when it’s unveiled in the near future. For now, I’d settle for a statue honoring this request!
I strongly recommend that supporters take action by signing the petition, and they might also enjoy streaming “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” on Paramount+. They could even revisit some of his earlier roles in “The Next Generation,” which boasts a handful of characters deserving of statues as well.
