As a long-time Star Trek fan, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment at the conclusion of Lower Decks, especially since it means less time with one of my new favorite characters: T’Lyn. While we’ve had some delightful episodes featuring Gabrielle Ruiz, it seems like we’re barely scratching the surface of this fascinating Vulcan.
The finale of Star Trek: Lower Decks left many disappointed for various reasons, however what upsets me the most is the reduced screen time for one of my beloved characters. We’ve had several episodes featuring Gabrielle Ruiz’s T’Lyn since her Season 2 arrival in “wej Duj,” but even in Season 5 it feels like we’re barely beginning to explore her character. Ruiz shared with TopMob that she’s grateful fans are satisfied, but confessed she was “terrified” before her on-screen debut.
During a recent conversation with Gabrielle Ruiz, we both eagerly waited for potential appearances of her character T’Lyn in future Star Trek series. I was curious to find out more about her experiences before taking on this role. Specifically, I wanted to know if she felt any apprehension prior to the unveiling of her Vulcan character and how she anticipated fan reactions. As a child, Ruiz, who had grown up watching The Next Generation, was well-informed about the passion and expectations of Star Trek fans.
Initially, I was quite apprehensive about not receiving a preferred or ideal response. However, I found myself pleasantly surprised as this wasn’t the case. Instead, what transpired was nothing short of marvelous – the response was warm, and the welcome was heartwarming.
The reception for Ruiz’s character was exceptionally positive, leading to its promotion to the main cast in Season 4. It reappears in this role in Season 5. This character has become a strong contender for inclusion on my list of top Star Trek characters, and I eagerly anticipate seeing it in upcoming voyages that I can access with a Paramount+ subscription.
According to Gabrielle Ruiz, I’m not alone in my admiration for T’Lyn. Initially, she was anxious that this might not be true, but she had faith that she was making the right choices. Her trust in Mike McMahan’s plan for the character grew when she realized her role in Season 2 wasn’t a one-off event – it was something more significant.
I had faith in them because this team is exceptional with an outstanding reputation, and they delivered on this project as well. Therefore, I put my trust in them for this role. Indeed, I was on edge until I saw the fantastic response, at which point I felt relief, followed by a moment of panic: ‘Oh no, now I have to learn everything about Vulcans!’ Fortunately, the Star Trek community is incredibly supportive and helping me get up to speed with all the necessary knowledge.
Gabrielle Ruiz can rely on the Star Trek community for guidance when unsure about aspects of Vulcans. Luckily, she also has the advantage of following in the footsteps of every exceptional actor who portrayed a Vulcan since Leonard Nimoy, even though he serves as an inspiration for many in this role.
Although it seems that the actress no longer needs worry about mastering Vulcan ways, there remains a possibility for T’Lyn to appear again in some upcoming escapade. It has been mentioned that Tawny Newsome wishes to incorporate her Lower Decks characters into the upcoming live-action Star Trek comedy series she is working on writing. While it may require an unusual event such as a time anomaly or T’Lyn being a holodeck program, I can only hope for more of her character in future instalments. I leave the technicalities to those in charge; I just want to witness more of T’Lyn in the future.
Currently, everyone can look forward to watching T’Lyn in “Star Trek: Lower Decks” Season 5, which debuts new episodes every Thursday on Paramount+. The series is off to a great start so far, and I believe it will end powerfully with an ending that won’t soon be forgotten by fans.
